Vanilla Expanded Shields Fix

Description

If you're like me, and I know there is at least a few of us out there, you've enjoyed the Vanilla Expanded series by Oskar Potocki with your modded games in Rimworld for some time. That said, it would appear that the massive number of mods under the vanilla expanded series has left some elements wanting of a bit of an update, such as Shields.

While there's no sense in necessarily patching every other mod out there on the workshop, it definitely has come off as a bit strange when certain items in the Vanilla Expanded series, itself, aren't compatible with Shields, despite every seeming reason to be. Having taken to one of the mod pages, myself, to ask about it, I found a whole discussion listing near every single VFE or VWE item that should be usable with shields, but are not.

Frankly, I think a more mod-settings and YMMV-oriented solution, such as how Simply Sidearms handles its designations, is the more appropriate way of dealing with this issue than literally patching every single item that should be usable with it. Unfortunately, however, I was met with what amounts to a "Do it yourself" response on the mod page in question.

So here we are.

This mod only requires the Vanilla Expanded Framework to load but it contains patches for the following weapons in the series and will activate them as long as their mods are active:

Vanilla Weapons Expanded:
Hand cannon
Lever-action rifle
Light SMG
Sawed-off shotgun

Vanilla Weapons Expanded - Quickdraw:
Automatic pistol

Vanilla Weapons Expanded - Laser:
Laser pistol
Laser SMG
Laser sword
Salvaged laser pistol

Vanilla Weapons Expanded - Frontier:
Derringer
Volcanic pistol
Frontier pistol
Repeating shotgun
Gauss Revolver
Salvaged laser revolver
Heavy Revolver
Lever-Action Shotgun

Vanilla Factions Expanded - Settlers:
Double-action revolver
Tomahawk

Vanilla Weapons Expanded - Coilguns:
Gauss magnum

Vanilla Weapons Expanded - Makeshift:
Makeshift pistol

Vanilla Weapons Expanded - Tribal:
Light club
Shiv
Throwing shards
Tribal Axe

- These items might look a little weird with the shields equipped, but that's all handled by the original mods. Considering that they weren't originally made to be shield-compatible, this is to be somewhat expected.

Q: Can you add [Insert Weapon] from [Insert Mod]?
A: I don't really intend to be a long-term modder, nor am I really capable of too much when it comes to modding. This was just something I wanted to do out of spite, and for my own save, but I figured since I wasn't the only person asking, it'd be okay to upload the patch. I won't say that I absolutely won't update this or add other weapons, but frankly, it's not really on my radar. Feel free to bug me, though.

Q: Will this work with [Insert Game Version/Mod Version]?
A: It's currently for 1.3, but technically, as long as the DefNames don't change, the mod names don't change, and Rimworld doesn't drastically alter how it handles patching, it should work for just about any version going forward, I think.

Q: Is this Compatible with [Insert Mod]?
A: This mod does not add, remove, or edit anything other than adding a single modextension value to the listed weapons 'behind-the-curtain', so to speak, so it should not have any compatibility issues outside of with mods that deliberately edit the same value.

Q: Can you make a translation?
A: As above, the only thing it changes is something that will never be seen by the player, even in dev mode, so there's no need for a translation.

could you look into the crypto weapons from vikings. the only crypto weapon usable with the crypto shield is the pistol which is very odd considering the vaulters from endless space that the armor is based off of are shown using crossbows and axes with shields, neither of which are usable with the shield in game. Don't know if it would break balancing but I just found it a really odd design choice

I suppose theoretically, the mod still functions as it says on the tin. These are more or less direct edits, and should still work. If for whatever reason you don't want to go in and edit those values, and just want a quick edit of one-handed items that theoretically could be used with shields from the VE series, circa August 2022, then this mod can do that. Otherwise, the menu is the better option.

No worries. It's basically obsolete, now, as the whole reason I made it was because I went and suggested that very options toggle, but it got shot down, back in August. tbh, it's the better method, and I was happy to just service the gap.

Thank you, sorry for missing the comment.

A question to the mod author, if I may.

In Mod Options -> Vanilla Shield Expanded, the game allows me to enable/disable weapons with shields.

What does this mod do differently, could you tell me please?

As listed above, that mod is a part of VEF.

@kenlon can you provide a link to the mod page I can't find the Vanilla Shields expanded.

Thanks for the info. Happy to have serviced the gap, but that was and is the preferred solution, in my mind, so I'm happier that it was added to the core mod.

Cheers, people.
