The S/S "Barentsburg" was built in 1905 and launched in 1906, ordered by the Archipelago Trade & General Navigation Co. as a small 120m liner to carry passengers, mail, and cargo across the isles. Her early career was uneventful except for when she was rammed by the coastal freighter "Nanortalik" in 1913. She made it back to North Harbor for repairs. Overall, she was a very profitable ship for the company despite her small size.

WI1 saw the "Barentsburg" handed over for conversions to a hospital ship, carrying the wounded away from Olsen Bay as the Donkk army encroached. While on her 19th mission, the "Barentsburg" ran down an enemy submarine by accident in thick fog. She survived the war and continued into the 1920s.

After the war, she was handed back to the company and served from 1918 - 1922 before going into drydock for refits.
These refits would have her converted to burn oil, as well as the shortening of her funnels in order to modernize her.
Her lounge paneling was painted green and new furniture was installed.

Eventually in 1928, on what would be her final voyage before scrapping, she struck an underwater reef while passing a nearby island. This created a gash on the underside of the hull, and she quickly obtained a starboard list. A quick inspection was carried out and it was determined that the ship would sink. Captain Aaviak Lundblad who was in command at the time ordered the lifeboats lowered. Out of the 1008 aboard, 985 were evacuated as she righted herself, slowly lowered into the water, and swung down and below the waves.
