Description
This mod requires BNW to work.

(Version 2: Mountain/Snow tiles now give 4/3/2/1 Science if they are 0/1/2/3+ tiles away from the city centre and within workable tile range, from 2 Science regardless, because Mountain/Snow next to the city affects early development a lot. 3+ because if you are using a mod which increases workable tile range (but ingame text wont reflect this). Also, maintenance cost from 2 to 0 (back to base game).)

Now requires Library. Can now be built if there is at least 1 Mountain or Snow in your territory within 3 tiles of the city, up from 1 tile and only for Mountains (TAKE NOTE: actually it searches for tiles within the workable tile limit of the city, which is a 3-tile radius in the default game, but will be changed if another mod you use changes this limit). It gives 3/2/1 Science for each Mountain and Snow tile 1/2/3+ tiles away from the city centre and within workable tile range, but no longer gives +50% Science. (Now you can benefit from multiple Mountains, making them more useful than just a natural defence. The poles also make for ideal observatory locations in real life, but the real reason for including Snow is to make them more useful alongside Mountains.)

  • 1. The bonus Science is given by the Observatory itself and does not require working the tiles with Citizens, unlike Jungle tiles in cities with a University.
  • 2. A single Mountain or Snow in your territory within 3 tiles of multiple cities will benefit multiple Observatories. Use this to maximise Observatory value in multiple cities if you cannot find a larger Mountain range or Snow range elsewhere (see hex grid diagrams).
  • 3. Natural Wonders which count as Mountains enable the construction of Observatories, and benefit them.
  • 4. The bad news is border growth tends to avoid Mountain and Snow, so you probably need to purchase tiles to maximise its benefit. The good news is AI Civs and City States also have borders which avoid Mountain and Snow, leaving more for you to purchase.
  • 5. Change in Science output of the Observatory for different conditions can be found in this Spreadsheet [docs.google.com]. The vertical axis represents the weights of Mountain/Snow, thus if your city is built on Snow and has 1 Snow tile next to it, look at 4+3=7. The horizontal axis represents the buildings in the city which give percentage-based Science: National College, University and Research Lab. The values highlighted in yellow are variables; download/copy and paste to experiment with different values. In general you’ll have less Science than before this mod unless the city is near a lot of Mountains/Snow, or the city’s raw Science output is low to begin with.

Special thanks goes to Chrisy15, who helped me a lot in the creation of the mod.

Works with my other mods. This mod was actually originally intended to be used with another of my mods which gives science buildings more percentage Science to make up for the Observatory's lost +50%, but I didn't want to put them together so that its modular. I'm not sure if I'm releasing that one though... maybe if enough people demand it.
