Better (mostly) Devil Deal Rooms!

Description
What is this?

This is a mod meant to make Devil Deals more enticing for the player to go for. Two or more items offered in almost (more on this later) every Devil Room you enter! It takes heavy inspiration from this mod by TheTurtleMelon, though the rooms it adds were created by me using the vanilla rooms as a base. The idea is for Devil Deals to be a better choice to go for, given how Repentance made made Angel Deals overall much better.

Even after stuff like the Blue Baby buff or Lazarus buff, I feel like Angel rooms are much better if you get unlucky with HP Up items, soul hearts and so on, so if you're gonna take the risk of entering a Devil Deal and see what's in it, you should at least get a decent couple of choices out of it.

The rooms were edited by taking the ones from the vanilla game and just adding more items to rooms that originally had one or zero items while keeping decor like fires or skulls like in the vanilla rooms, so they should feel as seamless from the vanilla experience as possible.

How is this different from TheTurtleMelon's mod?

Their mod still works for most things, but the motivation for me to make this mod was to make it more resilient to updates to the game, which can potentially break mods that directly edit the original rooms in the game. TheTurtleMelon's mod caused Black Markets reached by a crawlspace to not work and to just lead to the I AM ERROR room (even more of a problem now with the buff to Ehwaz or We Need To Go Deeper guaranteeing a crawlspace if used in the proper spot). Their mod hasn't been updated in a while to fix stuff like this so I figured someone other than me might want it back and up to speed with the latest Isaac updates.

Plus, I experienced some Devil Rooms coming back which were supposed to be removed by the mod after an update to the game, like the one that forces you to take one item to reach the other due to the pit around the items and just a one-tile narrow path connecting them. This mod will make those kind of rooms, plus any rooms that offer one or zero items, to be much, much more rare!

Why not remove those kind of rooms instead of making them rare?

This is why the mod's name includes the "(mostly)" part. Because of the way that room mods work with this game, my choices are to either:

  • a) Directly edit the original rooms so deals with one item or less no longer show up, which as I mentioned can break with updates to the game and also isn't compatible with other mods which change other special rooms like Curse Rooms, Sacrifice Rooms and Angel Rooms; or
  • b) To add my own rooms always offering two or more Devil items, give them much higher probabilities of showing up than the originals, and keep compatibility for new game updates and other special room mods, even if the unwanted rooms can still be found if unlucky enough

I figured the latter was the best way to go.

What are the Devil Deal room probabilities now?

The probabilities for you to run into a deal with a certain number of items offered is listed in the table below, comparing both how the unmodded game works and how the mod works (both taken in consideration after 1.7.9's changes to devil deal chances):

Type of Devil Deal
Probability in vanilla game
Probability with this mod
4 items in offer
1.45%
5.07%
3 items in offer
15.3%
19.0%
2 items in offer
55.5%
74.5%
1 item in offer
24.6%
1.25%
0 items in offer
3.18%
0.16%

Of course, note that some rooms can have extra goodies. A deal with 2 items may also have black hearts to take for free as well. A room like that, for example, will be slightly less likely to appear than rooms with just 2 items. Rooms like the one with 5 chests and 2 items are extremely rare (0.4% chance)! The table above is just about how many items the player can take, regardless of whether it has extra goodies, enemies, or nothing else in them.

Can you tweak the probabilities?

If enough people think that some of the probabilities for each type of Devil Deal are too low or too high, I can look into tweaking them to balance them out a bit more. I did play with this mod myself for a couple of days and didn't notice myself going for Devil Deals overwhelmingly more than Angel Deals; Angel is still extremely good with its item pool and lack of need to give up valuable health for them.

@Funny Name My educated guess is that this mod would mess with the probabilities of seeing the devil rooms that other mods would add. I believe this is the case at least with Fiend Folio (haven't played that mod yet so I can't say unfortunately), so anything that tries to give you new devil rooms to go through is going to be much more rare to see, since what this mod does is drastically increase the probabilities of seeing its own devil rooms and not others.

I don't think it would cause conflicts or crashes. Of course, I can't guarantee that, but this mod tries to not forcibly step on anything the vanilla game or other mods might do.

@Vin ah cool thank you for taking the time to compile this! it helps a bit but your mod is still nice to have.

@Kattack This took me longer than I wanted because apparently the tool I use to check each room and their probability of showing up, Basement Renovator, was reporting the same probabilities as before the new update. When I checked those values from the console by manually going into each room, I found new values that BR is not telling me about. Here are the probabilities I calculated:

- 0 items: 3.18% (was 3.77%, decreased, -0.59%)
- 1 item: 24.57% (was 32.35%, decreased, -7.78%)
- 2 items: 55.49% (was 51.8%, increased, +3.69%)
- 3 items: 15.32% (was 11.6%, increased, +3.72%,)
- 4 items: 1.45% (was 0.54%, increased, +0.91%)

Bottom line: changes aren't close to my mod and they weren't changed much compared to before 1.7.9, but they are still there.

can you update the item amount probabilities to reflect after the 1.7.9 patch? Wondering if they brought it closer to this mod.
