Germany, March 1945.

The Westwall (or Siegfried Line for the Allies) was a German defense line built just before and during the Second World War and runs from Kleve, on the Dutch border, to the Swiss border. The Westwall has a length of more than 630 km and it exicted of a series of (underground) bunkers, concrete tank barriers (also called dragon's teeth), machine-gun nests, barbed wire barriers, and minefields.

The Westwall was built between 1936 and 1945 by order of Adolf Hitler. The management of the works was entrusted to engineer Fritz Todt. The line in the west was a response to the French Maginot Line (build in 1930), a gigantic system of fortresses along the German border, which gave the Germans a lot of awe. In 1944 the Westwall provided a safe shelter for the retreating German units. Logistical problems on the Allied side and an unjustified respect for the West Wall also gave the Germans time to reorganize their defenses. This happened under the leadership of Field Marshal Walter Model.
When the Allies resumed their advance from mid September 1944, fierce fighting ensued, after which the advance quickly stalled. Because the Allies lost the Battle of Arnhem (Operation Market Garden) at that time and the German counter-offensive in the Ardennes had to be beaten back in December 1944 (Battle of the Bulge), it took until March 1945 before the Allies really could break through into German territory.

This map represents the northern part of the Westwall linking to the Dutch/German border near the city of Venlo. Try to make your way through the heavily defended Siegfriedline and seize the German Armoured/Weapon factory's in the industrial Ruhr Area.
