Sleeping Coach

Previous to the 1850s in North America, sleeping while traveling by rail was very uncomfortable, with passengers sleeping on hard wooden benches or stiff cushioned seats, until the first sleeping coaches in North America fitted with folding beds were made in 1857. The sleeping coach would be widely adopted by railroad companies, and the wealthy. With wealthy business owners and railroad company presidents ordering their own private sleeping coaches, with lavish details. This adoption by the wealthy would lead to the invention of the open ended rail coach, placed on the end of trains to be easily removed at any point on the trip. Sleeping coaches still remain a major part of rail travel today, with passengers having their own private compartments with folding beds.
