Spar Österreich wurde nach Vorbild des niederländischen Spar-Systems 1954 in Österreich gegründet. 1970 erfolgte der Zusammenschluss aller damaligen zehn Großhandelsfirmen zur Spar Österreichische Warenhandels-AG.
Spar Österreich ist nach wie vor eigenständig und die größte Spar-Gesellschaft der Welt.

Spar Austria was founded in Austria in 1954, following the example of the Dutch Spar system. In 1970, all ten wholesale companies at that time merged to form Spar Österreichische Warenhandels-AG.
Spar Austria is still independent and the largest SPAR-company in the world.
