Every part of this guide is very important and you shouldn't skip anything

For your best modding experience i recommend getting all DLCs. If you have only base game buy season pass - it can be purchased at 4$ and it's worth it

Most of you probably have all of those, but just make sure you have:

Vortex Mod Manager [www.nexusmods.com] (or other mod manager)

Fallout 4 Script Extender (F4SE)[f4se.silverlock.org] - expands the scripting capabilities of Fallout 4. 100% must have.

Fallout 4 ENB Binaries[enbdev.com] - Used for memory allocation, can also be paired with ENB presets to tremendously upgrade the game's overall look. Download the latest version.

BethINI [www.nexusmods.com] - For more comfortable INI tweaking.
From the ENBseries zip folder you downloaded, you're going to want to open it and open the Wrapper Folder. Drag files from folder into the main directory where the fallout4.exe is:

- enblocal.ini
- d3d11.dll
- d3d_compiler_46e.dll

Recomendation - Now you can choose to download one of many ENB presets found on Nexus. I'm using Quantum Horizons ENB[www.nexusmods.com] together with NAC-X[www.nexusmods.com] for incredible outcome. Important note! Never overwrite your enblocal file when replacing or setting up new ENBs.

In the ENBlocal.ini file values should be:

[MEMORY]
ForceVideoMemorySize=false
VideoMemorySizeMb=...

Most of you should use "ForceVideoMemorySize=false", but try out setting it to true because it might turn out better option for you.

1. Download the Unofficial Patch[www.nexusmods.com]

2. Buffout 4[www.nexusmods.com] - a mod that includes multiple game engine improvements, expands specific types of game memory, prevents several types of crashes and even provides proper crash logging if (when) the game eventually crashes. It also combines the functionality and replaces a couple of existing mods available on Nexus. See here [github.com]for a full list of fixes.

3. Boston FPS Fix is severely outdated, even with compatibility patches. Much better alternative available for us is Previsibines Repair Pack[www.nexusmods.com]. It covers not only Boston but ENTIRE GAME, including interiors.
Open BethINI.exe from "BethINI Standalone" folder, and select Fallout 4 from the dropdown menu.

Basic Tab

In the "presets" section, you'll want to pick High, Medium, or Low, depending on your PC capabilities. Now disable, V-Sync. I don't believe that V-Sync should be used in this game at any scenario since it is very poorly made.

Details Tab

set Decal Quantity to low. If you are like me and run Enhanced Blood Textures you want to set it to High.

Field of View - Increasing FOV, decreases FPS. More FOV means more things on your screen, meaning more things for this engine to render. I personally go with 85 opposed to default 70.

Particles (IMaxDesired) - Set it to 600. That helps FPS remain stable in large gunfights.

View Distance Tab

Object Detail fade should be set to "Low" or "Poor", helps out in Boston and small towns. Decals can remain High or Ultra.

Visuals Tab

Grass - Especially on lower end systems, grass could have a pretty significant impact on FPS. Be aware of those values:

60 - Least Dense. FPS will not decrease.

40 - Dense, may have a different impact system based, loss of 2-4 FPS (what I use)

20 - Densest, most FPS-Heavy

If you really want to use custom grass mod you should play around with those values and see what works best.

Shadows and Godrays - If you think your PC can handle them use Ultra Godrays Fix[www.nexusmods.com]. If you need that FPS disable them in Bethini or default Bethesda launcher.

You should check if BethINI has some other features you are interested in turning on or off and once you finish that, go back to the Basic Tab, and press "Save and Exit".

These are some final strokes to gain some frames. I recommend you to try if you're game is still struggling with FPS.

1. Thread tweaks

Disabling certain Multi Threaded based rending helped out my performance, for some odd reason. Feel free to try it out. Go to your Fallout4Custom INI and add/find:

bMultiThreadedAccumulation=0
bMultiThreadedRenderingUNP=0

They are by default set to 1, but I found that setting them to 0 adds like 3-5 FPS. So who knows, it might help your game too.

2. Decreasing resolution

Another big one. Decrease your resolution down 1 increment, you could find quite a boost in FPS if you're willing to sacrifice the sharpness of the image. Workaround for blurrier resolutions is to increase Sharpness of your ENB and tweak TAA to make it less blurry. Additionally you can add ReShade[reshade.me] on top of that.
Fallout 4 Official HD Texture Pack DLC Almost twice the size of the base game on its own. Will cause massive performance drops and stuttering for an incredibly minor visual gain

Insignificant Object Remover: Performance gain is placebo, disabling small clutter items with less than 5 polygons won't do anything. Also potentially dangerous if they mark the records as Deleted rather than Initially Disabled, as the game can crash if a script tries to reference a deleted object.

ELFX, Ultimate Interior Lighting Overhaul, etc. - Any mods that add dynamic shadows in interiors or outside will tank your frames. Just try entering Converga with this mod and see for yourself.

Flora FX Overhaul - Looks kinda cool but gives you like 5 FPS drop. Also it only works with vanilla trees.

Scrap Everything/Settlement Cleaning Mods - Breaks pre-combines in settlements.
By now, I hope your game is even more stable and has increased from 30 fps to 31 atleast :D

If it helped you consider leaving positive rating on steam as it took me a long time to put together

PRP developer here. Adding a small nitpick with regard to my own mod.

I recently did some searching through the discussions forum for the game (I rarely use the thing, as most of my interactions for the mod are either nexus or discord), and there are a few that are trying to use Frost with PRP.

Do NOT do this. They aren't compatible. Another dev maintains an equivalent to my mod explicitly for use with the Frost mods, and users have already likely installed it as part of existing guides, so I won't bother linking it here. It's known as FCF or Frost Cell Fixes.

And don't worry, FCF pulls from the same fixset I do.

Scrap everything causes problems? Damn that was one of my favorite mods.

one thing i'd like to add is that any graphical mods that change water visuals should also be avoided as they can make the game run incredibly slow.

Can recommend PhyOp, it's a extensive texture optimization mod with 3 versions depending on how much of a potato your computer is. Helps with both performance and loading times.

The guide worked, but only gave me a few extra frames, downtown boston, and Galactic zone from Nuka-Worl are still very laggy, almost unplayable for combat, any tips?
