Boeing 928 Search & Rescue Hydrofoil

Description
DESCRIPTION
This is a civilian search and rescue variant of the Pegasus class of hydrofoils that were used by the US Navy during the Cold War and very much represents a 'what if' scenario, as unfortunately all the Pegasus hydrofoils - except the Aries which was turned into a floating museum (see the link below) - have sadly all been scrapped due to budget cuts.

Given it's original designation of Boeing model 928, this imagines that instead of being scrapped, at least one of the other Pegasus hydrofoils was saved, had it's weapons removed and converted into a versatile search & rescue (SAR) vessel.

FEATURES
  • 1:1 Scale model of an actual Pegasus class hydrofoil, modified to operate as a search and rescue vessel.
  • Touchscreen radar with a maximum range of 5km, this can be switched between standby (off) and Scan mode (on) by pressing the button on the screen that reads 'Scan'.
  • A Mobile emergency beacon locator that you can use to pinpoint the approximate location of an emergency beacon.
  • Waypoint navigation system and autopilot that can be interacted with by both the Helmsman and the Rescue Officer.
  • A top speed of 110 knots with the RPS limiter turned off. The RPS limiter can be turned on for a more realistic top speed of 48-54 knots.
  • A highly detailed interior based on documentation, plans, videos and photographs of the real USS Pegasus and USS Aries.
  • 21 Stormlink compatible passenger seats.
  • An easily accessible survival equipment room that includes welding tools, fire protection clothing and deep sea diving gear.
  • A dedicated medical room with two medical beds and a shelf full of first aid equipment.
  • Created to be played with a crew of 1-3 players but can easily be used in single player thanks to the user friendly controls.
  • Stowable mast for sailing under any road and railway bridges.
  • A basic righting mechanism for use during the very rare occasions when the vessel capsizes, but this tends to only happen during physics glitches or if caught by surprise by a huge tsunami.

HOW TO START
  1. Turn on both diesel engines.
  2. Maneuver to where the water depth is greater than 5M.
  3. Lower the foils.
  4. Turn off the diesel engines and switch on the gas turbine.
  5. Increase the speed and foil altitude to get foilborne.
  6. Try not to scare the fishermen or hit anything while going over 50 knots and whatever you do - don't forget to stow the mast and lower your foil height before you go under any bridges.

HOW TO USE THE WATER CANNON
  • Sit at the Rescue Officer Station and press the button to turn on the water cannon.
  • Use the WASD keys to aim the water stream.
  • Alternatively you can go down to the water cannon itself and use the hose.

KNOWN ISSUES
  • Despite my best efforts to prevent it, the foils may still occasionally freak out and damage both themselves and the vessel. This is caused by a physics bug in Stormworks as the game doesn't like pivots with control surfaces on them being stressed by tight turns or sudden movements, especially on the high physics setting. Thankfully this is now quite rare.
  • One of the recent patches for Stormworks has caused an issue whereby using the new radar seems to slow the game down considerably when used at longer ranges. I've experimented with swapping around several different radar microcontrollers to see if that helps but the slowdown seems to persist and it appears as though it might just be a bug that's crept into the game at some point since December 2021.
I've reduced the radar range to around 5km to help alleviate this, but if you find this is still an issue then I recommend only using the radar periodically and switching it off by pressing the 'Scan' icon on the screen when it's not needed, or alternatively you can try switching to a lower physics detail setting via the game menu.

Massive thanks to this content creator as he finished his version well before me for an older version of Stormworks, and since it's also a 1:1 scale model I've used a lot of his work to finish mine.

oh thanks, i was planning to completely replace the microcontrollers myself but thanks.

@Hoobie - Since I've recently updated the Pegasus and Boeing 928's I also took a look at Ampoulepin's broken Boeing 929 Jetfoil.

Good news! I've fixed it. It needed whole new control surfaces, an overhauled turbine setup and a whole bunch of deprecated items replaced... I've even added 185 Stormlink compatible seats to it too. I'm not likely to use it much myself as it's primarily a passenger ferry, but feel free to download it via the link below:

Enjoy!

What issues are you having with the current one?

I've tweaked it already to make it more performance friendly but if you've found a better one on the workshop that's not too unrealistic then I'll definitely take a look to see if it's worth swapping it over.

Any chance of a new radar?
Robertson  [author] 12 Dec, 2023 @ 9:45am
Well that's unfortunate.

You could always try asking them politely if they plan on updating it?

I personally don't have any intention of creating any new content for Stormworks for the foreseeable future, as I'm far too busy fixing or otherwise modifying many existing creations so that they work in the game properly again after that Space DLC and compressed gasses update.

I will, however, continue maintaining and updating my own creations as much as I possibly can.

it doesnt work anymore thats the problem

Hi Hoobie,

Ampoulepin has already made a really good Boeing 929 Jetfoil that I really enjoyed using in Stormworks a few years ago.

You can find it here:
https://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1918972003

I'm not sure if they've updated it to work with the most recent version of Stormworks though, but you can certainly ask them.

could you please do a boeing 929
Robertson  [author] 24 Nov, 2023 @ 4:10pm
Just a quick heads up to let you all know that now that Geometa have fixed the fluid jets (more or less), I've also updated this creation so that it works with version 1.9.18 of the game.

Enjoy!

You're most welcome!

If you're also looking for a good fire fighting ship that's slightly slower but less costly on fuel then I would also recommend the RPA-10 by Mikavdwiel and especially the Puma or Cheetah by Spider, all are excellent ships and run quite smoothly despite their size and complexity.
