Turns out Icon mods are very simple, just need to create some XML files.
I used the tutorial at https://rimworldwiki.com/wiki/Modding_Tutorials
You can go to your Rimworld steam directory (<game installation folder>\steamapps\workshop\content\294100) and take a look at any of the mods you have installed for reference (or find this mod in that folder).
