The X-4s are a dockable mini sub series designed to replace their dated X-3 predecessor. Featuring numerous improvements in design and technology, the X-4s are a high quality answer to the question of effective mini subs.
-------------------------------------------
The X-4 comes in 2 flavors, jet powered and nuclear powered. The X-4A is more or less a direct upgrade from the X-3, using jet power to remain equally as compact. The X-4B is nuclear powered, and therefore significantly longer and heavier(relative to the A model).

(Contrary to the designation, I'm actually releasing the X-4B first since I wanted to get the more technically challenging version out of the way first. The X-4A will come eventually, but some IRL complications have halted progress for the foreseeable future.)

The X-4 features numerous advantages over its predecessor X-3, all mainly centered around making docking significantly easier. For starters, the X-4 features a stationary depth hold, meaning that you don't have to be moving fast to pull off a successful dock. The X-4 also features pitch, roll, and sideways strafe motors to allow for all the fine maneuvering you want when docking(all without having to be moving forwards). The X-4 also features a similar transponder system as found on Robert 4, meaning that you can share your location with your mothership and vice versa, allowing for full immersion as you don't need the game map to navigate.

----Operating the X-4B----
Some important things about the X-4B to note:
1. The X-4B is heavier than water and doesn't use ballast tanks to sink. Yup, you read that right, the X-4B is perhaps one of stormworks most advanced bricks. This can lead to complications when docking to smaller crafts, but you can use the X-4B's stationary depth hold to counteract this nicely(though this will take some fiddling around with depth hold values).

2. When spawning, swim down and in through the top hatch and pump out the water in the airlock. There are oxygen canisters by the ladder to refill your air while you wait, so you shouldn't drown.

3. The reactor spawns turned on, to save on startup time. While it does take a while to startup (around 2 minutes) by the time you exit the airlock, it should be close to running. I recommend leaving it on once started.

4. If you want to spawn it attached to a vehicle already, make sure to turn on the docking magnets with the selection tool.

5. (For docking with Robert 4): Set the depth hold 1.25m higher than whatever the depth hold for Robert 4 is set as. (If R4 is at -10, set X4 to -8.75). Once docked, set the (stationary) depth hold on the x4 to around +1m of Robert 4, and turn off all stabilizers and pitch/roll motors.

@osopolar624 that's a good idea actually

how do i dock to the long range research sub?

I feel like there should be a docking hatch on the top. A lot of subs have a docking hatch at the bottom.

ok thank you

Currently, Robert 4, Robert 3, and my Es.1 Long Range Exploration Sub. However, the docking system is pretty simple so it isn't hard to incorporate into other builds.

what sub does this dock to?

I figured that out just now but thank you for replying to my comment so quickly.
