Planning Roads

Description
This is a set of zero-cost and zero-maintenance roads to use for planning road and rail networks. All types can be upgraded to a fully-functional road once placed.

This set contains 5 types of planning road:
  • 2-lane Planning Road (Yellow)
  • 4-lane Planning Road (Orange)
  • 6-lane Planning Road (Pink)
  • Highway Planning Road (White)
  • Rail Planning Road (Default)

These do not use any new meshes or props; they are simply alterations of default roads so there shouldn't be any impact on performance.

I wasn't able to re-colour the railroad, but all props have been removed so it should be obvious it isn't the default railroad from a short distance.

Compatible with Network Skins

Potentially incompatible with other mods that change road colours.

If you have any issues or suggestions, please feel free to comment. I made these for myself but uploaded them in case anyone else could use them, so I'd like to make them as usable as possible.

To do list
    Duplicate prefab name error
    • As people have mentioned, this mod can produce a duplicate asset error related to highway pillars. It's recognised by the developers and is harmless, but I'd still like to correct it. I think I know how to do that but I'm concerned applying it could delete any previously laid planning roads in people's cities.
    1u roads
    • This has been requested numerous times and is something I'll look into adding when I re-install the game.
Planning roads unlocked at the start
    • This is something I'd really like. Though I did look into it I couldn't get it working. I'll have a look into it again at some point.

@fabio.albieri 66MB is the size of 3 songs. It is 66 million bytes, and you have 4-7 billion available.

66MB seems quite heavy... as I'll play on a resource limited laptop (8GB RAM, shared mem GPU) will this mod have an impact ?

Notorious96 this is a great suggestion; however these roads are not just guidelines, they are real roads, so I don't think it would be possible to implement the change. Shame, though.
Maybe there is a mod that just draws coloured lines on the terrain: in that case it would be possible to toggle visibility.

A suggestion for further work on this (if it comes): "Hide planning roads", so one can compare current layout with the planned layout in a glance.

@Cyril Figgis That error is harmless as mentioned by the author some comments below yours and in the description

I get the following error-message when the mod is enabled

@ADKCourage When they load, they are the very LAST option, on the far end of the list of roads. Have you checked there?

Has anyone else had issues where the planning roads aren't showing up in the game?

Today, I disabled everything except Skyve, Loading Screen Mod, and Patch Loader, started a new game on a vanilla map, and still not there. I verified that the assets are there in Skyve, and they show in the asset menu, but not in game. Anyone have any advice? It's driving me nuts.

@Sven ☠ 2157, @Jase

That error is harmless. It's actually recognised by the developers but shouldn't effect anything. I intend to have a look at removing it when I eventually re-install the game, but I'm concerned the necessary changes could remove any of the planning roads being used in other people's cities.

This mod worked near flawlessly for me the last time I played the game. Bridges should still be fine.

I should pay more attention to these comments. I'll modify the mod description soon to acknowledge what people have commented.

@Jase though I get the duplication error, I have found that the mod still works. However, I haven't actually tried to "plan" any bridges; not sure what will happen then.
