SHIP HISTORY
With the launch of the SS Kaiser Wilhelm Der Grosse and the RMS Oceanic(1899), the Cunard Line no longer had the Fastest or the largest liners on the Atlantic. On top of that the line was facing financial trouble. They needed a class of economical vessels that could hold the company over until their new super liners, the Lusitania and Mauretania, were complete. This class of vessels would consist of the Ivernia, the Saxonia & the Carpathia.

Carpathia started her career on the Liverpool to Boston route, mainly carrying cargo and immigrant passengers. She was later transferred to the New York to Mediterranean routes.

It was while she was sailing one of these routes that she picked up the distress signal from the RMS Titanic and began rushing to the rescue. When Carpathia arrived at the grim site, all that remained of the great liner were a handful of lifeboats and a sea of debris and bodies. Carpathia would return to New York with the survivors before resuming her regular route.

With the outbreak of World War one, Carpathia was requisitioned as a transport. During the war she carried troops and supplies across the Atlantic relatively uneventfully.

In 1918, while sailing westbound in a convoy, Carpathia was torpedoed twice. Her captain ordered all on board to abandon ship and after everyone was off, she was torpedoed a third time, sinking her. Her crew was rescued by the HMS Snowdrop.

NOTES
This Replica is dedicated to the 5 who lost their lives in the sinking of the Carpathia.
