It doesn't have to be directly below like that. On the ship I am making in survival (with friends since otherwise it will take months) I am going to have a system like that open the hangar doors on either side, but the mechanism is actually underneath the hangar floor with the arms that actually move the doors running under the floor to the doors themselves. It will work well with the maintenance access passages I am running throught the ship.

2nd. its up to you to put the actual piston setup somewhere else.. which is very easy.. if you take a closer look you see its not that big at all. that's what i tried to illustrate by putting an extra gate on the top of the hangar. im not going to build it for you ;)
though i would love to try and implement it all on a base or ship to come with a few sugestions.
also.. if at any point it is possible to do this with small landing gear.. its still the same setup ;)
