History:
The first traces of settlement date back to the middle of the 2nd millennium BC. In the 9th and 10th centuries, Tallinn was a very important place of commerce, known as far as Scandinavia and Russia. It already appears in the Book of Roger, an atlas of the world compiled in Sicily by Al Idrissi, a geographer, in 1154. A wooden fortress, built on the hill of Toompea, protects the port. The city is then the center of the province of Revala. She is known in Russian chronicles under the name of Kolyvan, and under that of Lindanise in the chronicle of Livonia of Henry the Latvian. In 1219, the city was invaded by the Danes, who built a stone fortress. They name the city Reval, after the name of the province of which it is the center. At this time also appears the name of Tallinn, formed by contraction of Taani linn "Danish city", used by the natives. In the Middle Ages, the city was rich and prosperous. A member of the Hansa, it is notably at the center of the salt trade. Purchased by the Order of the Teutonic Knights in 1346, the city experienced strong German immigration. A large German trading and working population lived in Reval until 1918 as well as descendants of the German-Baltic nobility, the Estonians being rather rural. Reval was reached by the Lutheran Reformation in 1523-1524. It then came under Swedish domination in 1561, then Russian in 1710, after the victory of Peter the Great during the Northern War against the Swedes. Reval, in German, or Revel, according to the official Russian name, soon after became the capital of the government of Estonia. The Russian presence is therefore continuous for three centuries. At the time of the Russian Empire, the German-Baltic aristocracy held the local parliament and German was the official language alongside Russian. In 1941 during the German invasion, the Soviets fought to protect their naval base and then evacuated it by sea with heavy losses.
