Description
BACKGROUND
The OKA-1 is a (fictional) Hudson-Class MLB (Motor Lifeboat), developed in a joint venture by the Canadian Coast Guard and the Royal Canadian Navy from 2013-2017, due to the growing needs to replace their ageing fleet of MLB's. Named after the Okanagan Lake in British Columbia, the OKA-1 has been in service since 2019, and is designed to be a low-draft, practical, manoeuvrable and high-speed search and rescue vessel. Capable of withstanding weather hurricane force winds and heavy seas, the hull and superstructure are welded aluminium with reinforced bulkheads. While it boasts high-tech navigational and emergency systems, it is not designed to be automated, and is intended to be in full-time operated by professionals due to its capability of speeds reaching 125 km/h (67 knots). The OKA-1 is equipped for life-saving rescue operations, and features a small cabin with a bunk and table. Intended to be manned by a crew of 1-2, the OKA-1 features all the necessities for short-range, overnight missions, as well as the capability to be attached to a larger vessel, to serve as a fast-response rescue launch.
