Description

Arguably one of the most interesting cars to date, the RAF-2203 Latvija (nickname Rafik), produced by the now defunct Rīgas Autobusu Fabrika (RAF), served a whole lot of roles, and has a lot of story behind it. Latvian in birth, but commie in blood. This vehicle used the 2,445 cc (149.2 cu in) engine of the GAZ-24, between the front seats with independent front suspension also from the GAZ-24 (but springs from the GAZ 13). It borrowed headlights and brake system parts from the Moskvitch 412, outside door handles from the Moskvitch 408, and 15 in (38 cm) wheels of the GAZ-21 Volga. This microbus had 9 variants, from Mail to Cardiac Ambulance and even Taxi, even having the RAF-2907, based on the 2203.

While the 2203 looked good, it had these faults:

Rust, especially in the frame rails
Unpleasant to drive in bad weather.
Quality control of the assembly was also poor.
Oil leaks and axle bearing failures were frequent.
It suffered overheating.
Serious vibration issues.
Failures of front suspension parts.
All of the above leading to poor handling, and high fuel consumption.
Access to the cab was difficult, despite the forward-control position.

This is the Blood Donor Clinic variant, here is some information I got from a 2002 looking website:

RAF-22035 for the centralized transportation of blood, the cargo area is separated from the driver's cabin by a partition; there is a sliding glass window on the partition. The interior finish provides washing and disinfection of the vehicle. Cargo compartment equipment: racks; two, located at the partition; one at the rear door and one middle rack above the rear axle. Thermal insulating containers TKM-7 - 7 pcs. ; TKM-3.5 - 16 pcs. The largest volume of transported blood (physiological fluids) 82.5 liters. Number of seats (including driver's seat) 2

- This is directly translated from Russian, ignore the grammar mistakes.
- It was hard to find interior pictures of this thing, I couldn't fit the second row of bloodbags (and its probably for the best).
- This thing has a stupidly high brick count due to the sanitation equipment and bloodbags.
