General game tips
  • When making a lobby, you have the option to host the server (instead of Official Dedicated choose Local Server), meaning that you'll be able to kick the bots at any point if needed (opening the console and using the kick command (e.g. kick nick).
  • Use Ctrl+F (Command+F for Mac) and write the name of a specific achievement in order to quickly find it.
  • Press Shift+Tab while in-game to enter the Steam Overlay. From there, in the bottom right corner, you can choose this guide to view it in a more accessible way.
  • When you reach a saferoom and use all the medkits in there, they will respawn at the start of the next chapter (except for HARD RAIN).
  • In the main menu of the game, you'll see an ACHIEVEMENTS button. That page is very useful with keeping track of your progress with achievements. It keeps track better than Steam, but in rare cases this also doesn't update or updates very slowly.

We categorized some achievements to certain maps and game modes, even though they can be done in others. We chose these from our experience and decided which are the easiest, but you may find a better solution.
Long Kill Achievements
Achievements that should be kept in mind while doing other achievements
Don't really rush for them but just think about them.
  • Z-GENOCIDEST 2: EPISODE 2
Kill 53,599 infected. You made sure the dead won't rise anymore!
Don't sweat about it until it's the very last achievement. There's no point in taking your time killing infected at this moment because you're gonna kill a lot of them eventually.

  • CRASS MENAGERIE
Kill one of each Uncommon Infected.
You'll get it without even knowing. Here they are :

    From left to right :
    • Ceda workers : Dead Center 1st & 2nd Chapters, No Mercy, The Last Stand;
    • Clowns : Dark Carnival;
    • Mud Men : Swamp Fever, The Last Stand;
    • Workers : Hard Rain.

  • HEAD HONCHO
Decapitate 200 Infected with a melee weapon.
I recommend sharp weapons such as the katana. Also, be sure to look out for golf clubs (see FORE! achievement)

  • FORE!
Knock off the heads of 18 infected with the golf club
Golf clubs spawn randomly on every campaign.

  • ROBBED ZOMBIE
Collect 10 vials of Boomer vomit from infected CEDA agents you have killed.
CEDA workers spawn in the 2nd Chapter of The Sacrifice, 1st and 2nd Chapters of Dead Center and the 4th Chapter of No Mercy.
They'll spawn as soon as you leave the Saferoom in the 2nd Chapter of Dead Center.
If you throw a boomer bile, some CEDA workers will spawn. Most likely one of them will drop another bile bomb and you can repeat the process until you get the achievement. They look like this:

Note: You have to be the one to kill them and then pick up the Boomer vomit.
  • CLUB DEAD
Use every melee weapon to kill Common Infected.
You can see which weapons you need if you go to the ACHIEVEMENT tab in the Main Menu.

As you can see, Golf Clubs, Baseball bats, Shovels, Pitchforks and Knifes don't count.

    There's a few special spawns, like :
    • The Guitar can spawn in other campaigns, but mostly on Dark Carnival.
    • The Nightstick : The Parish.
    • Machete : mostly on Swamp Fever.

It is reported that this achievement is a bit buggy, so try getting a kill with every melee weapon, but focus firstly on the 8 listed above.

  • PURE SATISFACTION
Kill 20 Jockeys with the shovel or pitchfork.
Load up the Mutation "Riding My Survivor" - all Special Infected are Jockeys - on the "Last Stand Campaign" , since there is a guaranteed Shovel right at the Spawn. Just camp the Spawn and wait for the Jockeys to come. The other bots aren't a problem since they aren't that smart and will forget to shoot at the Jockeys.
Note: You need at least 2 people for this method.

    BURNING SENSATION
Ignite 50 Common Infected with incendiary ammo.
Easiest done on Survival, since there is always an M60 and incendiary ammo + giant hordes.

  • TIL IT GOES CLICK
Using the M60, kill 25 infected without letting go of the trigger.
You can get this by playing a Survival map, as an M60 will always spawn. In normal campaign, there's a high chance of one being in the finale.

  • DISMEMBERMENT PLAN
Kill 15 Infected with a single grenade launcher blast.
Again, on Survival, a grenade launcher also spawns. When a horde is coming, throw a bile bomb (it attracts infected), wait a couple of seconds, and launch a grenade.

  • CHAIN OF COMMAND
Kill 100 Common Infected with the chainsaw.
You can do this on Survival too. Very easy and quick, although chainsaws are also found throughout normal campaign.
Dead Center & The Passing
Dead Center Tasks
  • PRICE CHOPPER
    Survive the Dead Center campaign.
You have to survive the finale (you can die any time before this). You also have to be there from when the lobby was created, you can't just hop in at the last chapter.

  • POLE POSITION
Escape Liberty Mall's Atrium before the first Tank appears
(4th Chapter) The Tank will spawn after a certain amount of Infected have been killed. This means you should avoid killing any Infected as much as possible. Move fast, avoid Infected, stun them by right-clicking : you have unlimited time. A great strategy is having a survivor stay at the car to fill the gas cans while the others scavenge them.
The Passing Tasks
  • TORCH BEARER
    Survive The Passing Campaign.
You have to survive the finale (you can die any time before this). You also have to be there from when the lobby was created, you can't just hop in at the last chapter.

  • GRAVE ROBBER
Collect 10 items dropped by a Fallen Survivor
(1st and 2nd Chapters) You have to be the one to pick the item, but not necessarily the one that kills them, although do try to be the one who does. They look like this:

  • CACHE GRAB
    Open 5 foot lockers.
(1st Chapter) They are dark green, and contain infinite supply of mollies, pipe bombs, pills or adrenaline shots. There's 3 places they could possibly spawn in the first building. Open however many you find, die, and then do it again.

  • THE QUICK AND THE DEAD
Revive 10 incapacitated Survivors while under the speed-boosting effects of adrenaline.
[1st Chapter) Bots will fall down the edge so you won't be able to do it with them. You will encounter 4 cache grabs on the way to this spot. Check every one of them and see if one has Adrenaline shots. Next, advance until you get here:

A friend has to jump and while on the effect of adrenaline pick them up. You can do it multiple times and then go back for more.
Note: The effect of an Adrenaline Shot lasts 15 seconds.

  • SHOTGUN WEDDING
Kill the Witch bride with a single shotgun blast on expert difficulty.
(1st Chapter) Host the game on a Local Server and kick the bots (opening the console and using the kick command) so they won't interfere. You can use any shotgun. Get as close as you can to her. You have to shoot her in the head as soon as she gets up, leans down a bit, and opens her claws.

  • KILLING THEM SWIFTLY TO THIS SONG
Play the new Midnight Riders song on a jukebox.
(2nd Chapter) There is a room filled with billiards/pool tables in the beginning of this chapter, and in a corner, there's a jukebox. Just press E until you get the achievement.

  • KITE LIKE A MAN
Kill a Tank only with damage from the original Survivors.
  • (3rd Chapter) This means that only these people must shoot at the Tank and kill it.
Host the game on a Local Server and kick the bots (opening the console and using the kick command). Put 2 gas cans in the generator to be sure that the Tank will spawn and camp below the bridge.Remember, you must not shoot at the Tank.
Dark Carnival, Swamp Fever & Hard Rain
Dark Carnival Tasks
  • MIDNIGHT RIDER
    Survive the Dark Carnival campaign
You have to survive the finale (you can die any time before this). You also have to be there from when the lobby was created, you can't just hop in at the last chapter.

  • THREE’S A CROWD
Rescue three Survivors from a single rescue closet
(1st Chapter) Set the beginning difficulty to expert. Kill the bots. Change it to easy. The rescue zone is very close, right after the billboard, at the Motel.

  • CL0WND
Honk the noses of 10 Clowns
They spawn in this campaign. When you see one approaching, just right click while aiming at their head and you should hear a *honk* sound.

  • FRIED PIPER
Using a Molotov, burn a Clown leading at least 10 Common Infected.
It's a horde with a clown leading them, you most probably get it accidentally.

  • GONG SHOW
Prove you are stronger than Moustachio
(4th Chapter) In the very beginning, there's this Strong Man Game right before the go karts.

You must inject yourself with adrenaline and have a melee weapon equipped. Then, just hit the red box.

  • STACHE WHACKER
Prove you are faster than Moustacio.
(4th Chapter) Before the barns, there's this machine:

Press E to start it, then punch (or shoot) the popping "moustacios".
If time runs out, there will be an option to choose to continue. After you've beaten his record, the machine will break.

  • THE MAIN ATTRACTION
On the concert finale, survive until the helicopter arrives without leaving the stage.
(5th Chapter) Medkits and other utilities randomly spawn in 3 rotations, hopefully they will spawn on the stage. Stay there until you see the helicopter has landed.

  • GUARDIN' GNOME
Rescue Gnome Chompski from the Carnival.
Load up the mutation "Last Gnome on Earth" (on Dark Carnival) and select the 5th Chapter. Pick up the gnome from the Saferoom, complete the Finale and make sure to bring him with you on the helicopter. But if you want to do it the traditional way, win this minigame in the 2nd Chapter, and as a reward you get a gnome. Bring it with you all the throughout the chapters.
Swamp Fever Tasks
  • RAGIN' CAJUN
    Survive the Swamp Fever campaign.
You have to survive the finale (you can die any time before this). You also have to be there from when the lobby was created, you can't just hop in at the last chapter.

  • WING AND A PRAYER
Defend yourself at the crashed airliner without taking damage.
(2nd Chapter) You must not take damage after opening the door. Then, run to the detached wing and camp on top of it. A few zombies will come from behind, but almost all will come from the plane.

  • DEAD IN THE WATER
Kill 10 swampy Mudmen while they are in the water.
(3rd Chapter) Firstly, here's how Mud Men look like:

When you'll reach this location, you'll have to pull a lever to lower a bridge. Then, a horde will spawn and there will be plenty of Mud Men to kill. Be sure to stay in the water so it would be easier. Bots will interfere and if you are alone, they'll get all the kills. I highly recommend killing them before.
Hard Rain Tasks
  • WEATHERMAN
    Survive the Hard Rain campaign.
You have to survive the finale (you can die any time before this). You also have to be there from when the lobby was created, you can't just hop in at the last chapter.

  • SOB STORY
Navigate the sugar mill and reach the safe room without killing any Witches.
(2nd Chapter) Move fast, only use melee weapons to avoid making sound, and remember the general spots Witches spawn. There's around 10-15 Witches in total (more or less). You might want to save adrenaline shots for this part. Bots are not capable of startling witches.
The Parish, The Sacrifice, Cold Stream & The Last Stand
The Parish Tasks
  • BRIDGE BURNER
    Survive the Parish campaign.
You have to survive the finale (you can die any time before this). You also have to be there from when the lobby was created, you can't just hop in at the last chapter.

  • VIOLENCE IN SILENCE
Navigate the impound lot and reach the cemetry safe room without tripping any alarms.
(3rd Chapter) Bots don't trigger car alarms. Make sure to equip a melee weapon to not misfire a shot and alarm a car. After the sewer you will encounter the parking lot. The cars with blinking red lights are alarmed. Don't shoot or jump on them.

  • BRIDGE OVER TREBLED SLAUGHTER
Cross the bridge finale in less than three minutes.
(5th Chapter) Host the game on a Local Server and kick the bots (opening the console and using the kick command). The timer starts when the bridge has lowered. Just keep to the left side of the bridge, as no Infected will bother you. When you meet the Tank, ignore it and go straight for the ladder on back of the left truck.
Note: You can load the Mutation "Last Man on Earth" and there will be no bots to bother you, and no Common Infected.
The Sacrifice Tasks
  • SUPREME SACRIFICE
    Complete "The Sacrifice".
Even if you sacrifice yourself, you will still get the achievement.

  • BARREL ROLLED
Kill a Special Infected with an exploding barrel.
(1st Chapter) There's an Alleyway at the very beginning of the Chapter. There is a guaranteed spawn of the barrel there. This is the location, along with the barrel:

Note: You can do this in the Versus gamemode as well.

  • CHAOS GENERATOR
Have all three generators running at once in The Sacrifice finale.
(5th Chapter) Cannot be done with bots, you will need 2 additional players - since the bots will follow you. This achievement will not unlock simply if all three have been started and are running at the same time - all three need to be started simultaneously.

  • KILL BILL
Have Bill sacrifice himself for the team.
(5th Chapter) You have to choose Bill in the lobby. At the end of the chapter, at the bridge, you'll have to go back as Bill and restart the generator. Everyone in the team will get the achievement.
Cold Stream Tasks
  • STREAM CROSSER
    Survive the Cold Stream campaign.
You have to survive the finale (you can die any time before this). You also have to be there from when the lobby was created, you can't just hop in at the last chapter.
The Last Stand Tasks
  • STILL STANDING
Survive The Last Stand campaign on any difficulty.
You have to survive the finale (you can die any time before this). You also have to be there from when the lobby was created, you can't just hop in at the last chapter.

  • HOUSEHOLD NAMES
Discover the hidden room in the Last Stand campaign
(1st Chapter) After you jump out of the first house you enter, take a right and you'll see a metal door. You will have to destroy it with melee weapons (chainsaw works best). The achievement will pop up as soon as you go inside.

Note: Pressing "E" on the keyboard inside the room awards you a Golden Crowbar, although it does not count towards the GOLDEN FREEMAN Achievement.

  • THE LAST DASH
Complete The Last Stand campaign in 13 minutes or less, without any Survivors dying.
It's recommended to have a full team, but you might be able to pull it off on your own if you know the map well enough. Just ignore the Tanks until the very end of the campaign. You can get incaped, but you can't die. If you die, you have to restart the whole campaign from the lobby.

  • THE LAST FRONTIER
Survive The Last Stand campaign on Expert Realism.
You have to survive the finale (you can die any time before this). You also have to be there from when the lobby was created, you can't just hop in at the last chapter.
Versus Achievements
These achievements cannot be done alone. You can create a lobby by yourself, you will be unable to start unless someone else joins. If everyone leaves and you're the last person the server will close.
You could potentially start a game alone, but this requires the usage of mods (see Mods section).
  • CONNECTING FIGHTS
Play a Versus game on Dead Air from start to finish.
This achievement can be earned by playing a whole game of Versus without quitting the game, win or lose. You must play the game starting from the lobby. You don't have to reach each Saferoom.

  • HEARTWARMER
In a Versus round, leave the safe room to defibrillate a dead teammate.
This cannot be earned if you kill the teammate you revive. The Infected needs to kill the Survivor in order to unlock it. Once you reach a Saferoom, close the door and block it.

  • STRENGTH IN NUMBERS
Form a team and beat an enemy team in 4v4 Versus or Scavenge.
You have to choose the option from where you select "Versus". You need 3 other people the join your lobby, but also another team on the other end to compete against - making it a total of 8 people required to get this achievement. Since team games are unpopular and lobbies are much quicker to use, you will probably have to organize a game with friends to get this achievement (alternatively, you could use external help, meaning you would have to mod the game.)

  • SACRIFIZZLE
As a Special Infected, incap someone who is trying to sacrifice themselves.
Medium difficulty. (The Sacrifice, 5th Chapter) The Charger is best to use because it has the higher base damage when incapping a Survivor.

  • VALVE GIFT GRAB 2011 - L4D2
Collect three gifts dropped by Special Infected in Versus Mode.
You can get this achievement only in December. But, if you don't want to wait, just change your date and time. Follow this guide for more info:

    https://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=910697842
Scavenge Achievements
These achievements cannot be done alone. You can create a lobby by yourself, you will be unable to start unless someone else joins. If everyone leaves and you're the last person the server will close.
You could potentially start a game alone, but this requires the usage of mods (see Mods section).
  • HUNTING PARTY
    Win a game of Scavenge
You cannot play this game mode alone. You must play on Official Servers. Points only award to the Survivors.

  • PORT OF SCAVENGE
Play 5 full games of Scavenge on The Port.
Easy difficulty. You don't have to win, you just have to play from start to finish, so be in the Lobby when it starts. If making the lobby, make sure to check "Single Round"; it will still count as a full game and count towards the achievement.

  • GAS GUZZLER
Collect 100 gas cans in Scavenge.
You have to be the one pouring the gas cans. Choose a smaller map for you advantage. If you still have gas can but the time runs out, there will be overtime and if you pour it you'll gain another 20 seconds.

  • FUEL CRISIS
Make a Survivor drop a gas can during overtime.
Easy difficulty. Overtime means that a Survivor still holds a gas can when the time runs out. Get the Charger/ Hunter/ Jockey/ Smoker rotation (although the Charger is the easiest), and target a bot that still has a gas can. It's hard to time when playing with random people.

  • SPITFIRE
Destroy 20 gas cans as the Spitter.
The best map to do it on is Dead Center's Mall Antrum. Wait for someone to throw the cans from the balcony and spit on them or you could wait for them to pile up.

  • GAS SHORTAGE
Cause 25 gas can drops as a Special Infected.
I believe the Spitter can't cause a gas can drop, the others work.

  • SCAVENGE HUNT
Stop the enemy team from collecting any gas cans during a Scavenge round.
Easy difficulty. Have a friend in the Survivor's team and have them camp. Now just wait 1:30 minutes.

  • CACHE AND CARRY
Collect 15 gas cans in a single Scavenge round.
Medium Difficulty. It can be done with a friend in the Infected Team and you in the Survivor Team. If there are multiple members in the Survivor team, you will all get the achievement, no matter who poured the gas cans.
Note: Pouring a gas can adds 20 seconds.
Special Infected Achievements
Achievements that need you to take the role of a Special Infected.

These achievements cannot be done alone. You can create a lobby by yourself, you will be unable to start unless someone else joins. If everyone leaves and you're the last person the server will close.
You could potentially start a game alone, but this requires the usage of mods (see Mods section).

Also to note that most of these achievement are done with the cooperation of friends and luck. Choose a map you like, think it's best suitable for you and make up strategies as you go on. (We did most of them on Versus Dead Center).

Spitter Tasks
  • GREAT EXPECTORATIONS
As The Spitter, hit every Survivor with a single patch.
Easy difficulty. Just have your friend get the bots in a corner. Just peek once and spit. You can get it even after you die.

  • I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE
As the Spitter, spit on a Survivor who is pinned by a Charger.
Medium difficulty. Have a friend who is low on health get pinned by the Charger. Remember, they have to get incapacitated first by the Charger for the achievement to count.

  • ACID BATH
As the Spitter, spit on a Survivor who is pinned by a Hunter.
Medium difficulty. The Hunter must have incapacitated someone before spitting on him. Have your friend kill 2 bots, leaving him and another bot alive. Have a Hunter pin down the bot and spit when you see the notification "Hunter has incapacitated [..]"

  • A SPITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS
As The Spitter, spit on a Survivor being choked by a Smoker.
High difficulty. You have to be extremely fast to get it because a Smoker has very little health. Best to choose a map with closed areas so it would be harder for the Smoker to die (like Dead Center's 1st Chapter). It won't work if the Smoker is just dragging the Survivor across the floor.
Note: "Being chocked" means that the Smoker must have dragged a Survivor all the way up to him, where he wraps his tongue around them and starts hitting them.
Jockey Tasks
  • QUALIFIED RIDE
As the Jockey, ride a Survivor for more than 12 seconds.
Easy difficulty. Host the game on a Local Server and kick the bots (opening the console and using the kick command). Have a friend let you ride him. Make sure he is at full health. Best tried on the Mutations "Riding My Survivor" - all Special Infected are Jockeys.

  • RODE HARD, PUT AWAY WET
As The Jockey, ride a Survivor and steer them into a Spitter's acid patch.
Medium difficulty. Wait behind a wall so the bots won't see you. When a Spitter spawns, have a friend sit in the spit and all you have to do is ride them. Alternatively, you don't have to ride into a Spitter's patch, a Spitter can just spit on you.

  • BACK IN THE SADDLE
As The Jockey, ride The Survivors twice in a single life.
Medium difficulty. Have your friend kill 2 bots. Your friend will let you kill the bot and then let himself get killed by you. Best tried on the Mutations "Riding My Survivor" - all Special Infected are Jockeys.
Charger Tasks
  • FLIGHT DECK
Instantly kill a Survivor as the Charger.
Easy difficulty (Dead Center, 1st Chapter) The first hallway when you go down the stairs from the rooftop. Have a survivor stand at the very end of it, right by the window.

Then, as the Charger, spawn in the hallway next to them, line up with him and just charge.
You will also get the LONG DISTANCE CARRIER achievement.

  • LONG DISTANCE CARRIER
As the Charger, grab a Survivor and carry them over 80 feet.
    (See FLIGHT DECK achievement)
Also, the result should look like this:

  • SCATTERING RAM
As The Charger, bowl through the entire enemy team in a single charge.
Medium Difficulty. (Dead Center, 1st Chapter) Go down the stairs, and go into the first left room. There should be a longer balcony-area. Line them up like this, where it's the tightest. Stay close to them but not too close so they won't disband.

  • MEAT TENDERIZER
As The Charger, grab a Survivor and smash them into the ground for a solid 15 seconds.
Medium difficulty. Host the game on a Local Server and kick the bots (opening the console and using the kick command). Make sure your friend is at full health and just rush at him. You'll get the achievement when you kill them.

  • WEDDING CRASHER
As the Charger, grab a Survivor and crash them through 8 chairs at the wedding.
You should do it on Versus Survival, on the Passing's first Chapter, since in normal Versus you'd have to make the trip from the spawn to the pavilion. But be careful, you have about 45 seconds until you'll have to spawn as the Tank, and then you'd have to wait for the rotation or restart the game.
Assign yourself like this, on the right to the pavilion, and aim like shown. Be careful that there's a fallen chair you'll have to shoot tout of the way since it will cause a bug where the Charger will stop there instead of crashing through all the chairs.
Other
  • FAT NINJA
As the Boomer, vomit on a Survivor without having direct line of sight with them.
Easy difficulty. Position yourself in the right corner of the spawn, behind the vents, on top of this can.

As the boomer, position yourself like shown and aim like shown. It doesn't have to be as precise as in the pic.

  • ONE HIT WONDER
As the Hunter, land a 25 damage pounce.
Medium difficulty. (Dead Center, 1st Chapter) It can take a few tries, but it's not hard in itself. Make sure the other survivors are busy with other infected.
Have a friend go and stand at this exact spot, in between the manhole and the vent, next to the supply desk.

As the Hunter, go to the third floor of the mall, crouch-jump on the glass barrier - stay crouched - and line up your crosshair at the 75% sign, like this:
There are no achievements related to the Smoker.

Specific Kill Achievements
Achievements that require you to kill infected in a specific way

There are mutations which remove common infected (e.g. Four Swordsmen) and only leave out Special Infected, which makes getting these achievements much easier. You can get them easily in normal playthroughs, though.
  • ACID REFLEX
Kill a Spitter before she is able to spit.
You can see spitters from very far away. Make sure you have a rifle equipped.

  • A RIDE DENIED
Kill a Jockey within 2 seconds of it jumping on a Survivor.
When you see a jokey, wait until it jumps on a survivor, and kill it as fast as you can.

  • SEPTIC TANK
Use a bile bomb on a Tank.
    Just throw it at him.

  • LICKETY-SPLIT
With a sharp melee weapon, cut a Smoker's tongue before he ensnares you.
One easy way to earn this is by playing the "Four Swordsmen" Mutation - you only have katanas -, and the game will only spawn Special Infected.
When you see a smoker, move to the front and try to make him target you. When he starts to shoot his tongue, there is a split second you need to swing your sword right before his tongue touches you.

  • GET SKEETED ON
Kill a pouncing Hunter with a shotgun.
Try to get the Hunter to target you, and count on your reflexes.

  • ROCKY HORROR PICTURE THROW
    Destroy a Tank's rock in mid-air.
    Yeah.

  • TANK BURGER
Kill a Tank with melee weapons.
Load up the mutation "Chainsaw Massacre" on the campaign "The Passing" - the first Chapter has a Tank very close to the Spawn ( Inside the first building/ in the Alleyway/ in the Park). On this Mutation, you all spawn with infinite Chainsaws - which count as melee weapons. Killing the Tank can take less than 10 seconds.

  • LEVEL A CHARGE
Kill a Charger with a melee weapon while they are charging.
It's impossible to kill a full health charger with one melee swing. They have to be at least at half health, so 5 AK47 shots. Try to aim the head and you'll get.

  • NEW HAIRCUT
Kill a Witch using only a sharp melee weapon, without anyone getting incapacitated or killed.
Have the Witch target one player and the rest get her from behind. Aim for the head.
Time Related Achievements
Medals
You can get medals on both Survival and Versus Survival and they will count towards these achievements.
  • THE BIG TEN
Survive for 10 minutes on any official map in Versus Survival.
This achievement is linked to the gold medals stat, meaning if you already have a gold medal on a map you won't be able to get it. Go for maps you don't already have medals both on normal and Versus Survival.

  • BEAT THE RUSH
In a Survival round, get a medal only using melee weapons.
You only have to get a bronze medal, but if you already have bronze medals on every map, you will need to get a silver medal. You need to get a medal you don't have already. The entire team has to use melee, even when incapped, for the achievement to unlock.

  • SUPREME SURVIVALIST
Survive for 30 minutes on any official survival map.
In Dead Center's Mall Antrum, you can boost yourself on top of the lift where no Infected or Tank can get you, except for the Smoker, so be very careful and make sure to not get incapped. This method requires at least one other person.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OG7AwrzUEsc&ab_channel=AlterLynx
The person who will boost you will most likely die, but they'll still get the achievement even if they're dead.
  • GETTING STARTED
Earn a bronze medal on any official survival map.

  • A LITTLE HACK AND SLASH
Earn a bronze medal on every official survival map

In order to get a medal, you need to survive a certain amount of time.

For Bronze: 4 minutes.
For Silver: 7 minutes.
For Gold: 10 minutes.

There are 31 Survival Maps. Here they are:

Get a team or check out the mods section down below if you're alone, because Survival is very hard. Glitching is also an option.

The majority L4D2 is on Steam, so you can search for players on its Steam Discussion Page.

You can also try on Reddit, people are active and are people willing to help.

There is also a discord server I will not link and I do not recommend joining it since there are scams going on there... but I did find players there as well. Join it at your own risk, you can try googling the server but be careful. (Thanks for AustrAlien2010 for reminding me)

Here is another guide I've linked that should help with the maps.

Difficulty Achievements
  • STILL SOMETHING TO PROVE
    Survive all campaigns on Expert.
We recommend loading up the mutation "Gib Fest" (infinite-ammo M60) and do them like that if you are alone or having difficulties. Even with the M60's we struggled to finish them on Expert.

Here are the changes that Expert difficulty offers:
    • There is now friendly fire. It inflicts half damage to the Survivors.
    • The Infected receive x0.5 damage (two shots with most weapons), while dealing 20 damage from the front, 10 from the back.
    • The Tank has 8000 health points, incapacitates Survivors in one hit and deals 150 damage when pounding (killing an incapacitated Survivor in two hits).
    • The Witch receives × 0.5 damage to the body, can instantly kill a Survivor regardless if they are in normal or black-and-white vision and is startled in 4 seconds.
    • Special Infected are smarter, have more health and deal more damage.
    • Fire inflicts 40 damage per second to the Survivors (that's a lot of damage!).

Below are the Campaigns that count towards this (The Passing doesn't count, since it's an add-on). I've added notes from my own experiences, but you may have to look up concrete strategies if you get stuck somewhere (although it ruins a bit of the fun).
Note: We did it with the help of the mutation Gib Fest, so some of these tips may not apply.

    • Dead Center
      • Pretty straight forward. When you have to deliver the Cola's, have one friend hold the entrance of the Market while you deliver them (Infected only spawn outside).

      • At the finale, make sure to be FAST cause you don't want to be dealing with 8k health Tanks, so make sure you all know the map.

    • Dark Carnival
      • This one is a bit harder. The first 2 Chapters are OK, just run and gun. But, when you get to "The Coaster" (3rd Chapter), it will get more difficult. Since it's a narrow tunnel most of the time, be careful to stand side by side so you won't be dealing team damage (this was the primary cause of our losses on this map). The tank may or may not spawn on the first level, but if it doesn't it will definitely spawn at the second level, right before the exit.

      • The Barns shouldn't be much of a problem until the gate, where a giant horde will spawn. You can all camp on the barns' rooftops, the ones you drop down to open the gate. Have one friend go and activate it. Few Infected spawn there, but be careful of Smokers. After you're finished with the horde, as you go through the gates, another one will spawn. Infected will also come from behind, above and every direction - so have someone look behind because one M60 is enough to hold the front. Be quick because the Saferoom is right around the corner.

      • The finale is a pain. You can have one Tank spawn right at the start of the campaign, so just die because it's not worth it. Before turning off the lights and starting the concert, stockpile and remember where the items spawned.
As for strategy, make one up based on your skills. You can choose to stay scattered to cover more ground, but be careful to not get incapacitated. Or, you can stay together on the stage, where the most items are. It really depends on the item spawns and the way you play.
There are 3 Tank spawns until the helicopter arrives, and 2 spawn right as it lands. So, as soon as you hear it, run for it as fast as you can, don't bother with the Tanks, just get inside the heli .

    • Swamp Fever
      • The first three Chapters are very easy. There are tricky parts, yes, like the Witches - be careful, but just turn off the lights and don't fire (right click to stun Infected to get further away from the Witches, and then kill them)

      • As for the finale, the mounted machine gun is useless. One Tank will spawn, and then a pair of two will soon after. After the last 2 Tanks have been killed, head for the gates. Be careful! they can spawn inside the mansion. A great strategy is to have it target a player, and have that player loop around the balcony, while the others shoot at the tank. The narrow corridors will slow down the tank and it won't kill its target.

    • Hard Rain
      • To be added.

    • The Parish
      • To be added.

  • THE REAL DEAL
Survive a campaign on Expert skill with Realism mode enabled.
Do the Last Stand campaign, since you already have an achievement related to it. (See also THE LAST FRONTIER)

Here are the changes Realism offers:
    • Realism removes the outlines that normally appear around teammates when there is an obstruction between one another.
    • Common Infected & the Witch receive × 0.5 damage to the body on Easy difficulty, × 0.37 on Normal, × 0.25 on Advanced & Expert.
    • You do not respawn in Rescue Closets.

Focus on staying close to each other, that's basically it. If you're not using external help, this will be hell.

The Last Stand's finale spawns double tanks, meaning instead of 1 Tank at a time, you get 2 at a time.
Miscellaneous Achievements
  • GNOME ALONE
If you are reading this achievement, Gabe Newell has successfully launched Gnome Chompski into space.
Automatically achieved by starting the game.

  • CONFEDERACY OF CRUNCHES
Finish a campaign using only melee weapons.
All campaigns are the same length and basically have the same difficulty. We recommend The Passing since we think the most appropriate, has 2 melee spawns at the start and the finale is quite easy. Grenades are safe to use, but if you get incaped, don't shoot the gun.
Also, a quite easier way is to load up the Mutation "Chainsaw Massacre" and do it that way.

  • ARMORY OF ONE
Deploy an ammo upgrade and have your team use it.
You can find them across all campaigns, especially in their finales. But, you can easily open a Survival map, they are in your Spawnpoint.

  • ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM
Revive an incapacitated teammate while a Tank is nearby.
If you see an incapacitated teammate, make sure the Tank is busy with the other Survivors.
You can get this in any Versus map by having a friend play as Infected. Eventually they will get to spawn as a Tank, incapacitate a teammate and stand near you while you are reviving him.

  • MUTANT OVERLORD
    Play 6 mutations.
Even though the achievement says "play", you have to finish a Chapter for it to count. Mutations that are related to other achievements above:

    • Chainsaw Massacre - all players have infinite Chainsaws.
    • Gib Fest - all players have infinite ammo M60 Machine Guns.
    • Riding My Survivor (in Versus gamemode) - only Special Infected that spawn are Jockeys.
    • Last Gnome on Earth - you have Gnome Chompski with you in each Saferoom.

  • SHOCK JOCK
Revive 10 dead Survivors with the defibrillator.
It will not count if you killed the Survivor you defrib. They have to die to Infected... or to falling. You can farm this by going on Survival Dead Center, and have your friend jump from a high spot. You can alternatevely do this by playing on a custom map.

  • GOOD GUY NICK
Plays games with free weekend players and helps them survive a campaign.
The last free weekend was on November the 16th 2024. Have a friend make a second account and play with him. To be sure, start both from the same lobby and finish a campaign - without dying in the finale.

  • GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PRESENT
Spread cheer by helping a free holiday player survive a campaign.
You may get this by randomly playing on public lobbies, or by going on Reddit/ Discord/ Steam and asking for someone to help.

  • GOLDEN FREEMAN
Find the golden crowbars hidden in the Left 4 Dead 1 survival maps.
We've linked an easy guide to follow.

Mods
  • Some achievements are just too difficult to hunt alone, especially gaining medals or doing expert realism campaigns.
  • We are indifferent to the usage of any mods, play however you want, you payed money for this game. We compiled a list of mods that keep the game balanced if you are playing alone or really struggle with some hard bits that shouldn't be that hard.
    https://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2500372142
  • Even with the mods listed above, the difficulty is still there. They only make it fair for singleplayer.
  • For some mods to apply, you have to start the lobby as a Local Server.
