Before the development of tactical hyperspace capabilities, the Romulans waged war by bombarding fixed locations with long-range weaponry.

As part of their tactics to avoid retaliation, Snipe warships were built to be small and difficult to detect. The ships themselves operated with little to no power and the crew held in suspended animation during their months long flight to a firing position.

Upon arrival, the crew awoke to a frenetic assault schedule before navigating to a safe vantage point from which to confirm the attack's success.

Unfortunately, rapid advances in Federation hyperspace, sensor, and point-defense capabilities quickly rendered these tactics obsolete.

At the conclusion of the war, Snipes underwent a series of hyperspace refits and were commonly used as short-range scouts and VIP transports.
