Grant's Avars (Bayan I)

The Avars, descendent from the Rouran of the Mongol steppe, were the protege of the Huns - but while they did not conquer Europe, they established a Khaganate on the plains of Hungary that would last centuries. Crippling the weak Gepid Kingdom, the unruly band of barbarians raided the Lombards, Franks and Byzantines for centuries. It was only Charlemagne who finally destroyed their kingdom; by that time, they had amassed countless treasure that would fund the Frankish treasury for generations. They became the last Khaganate in Europe - converting to Christianity only after all of their lands had been taken.
