Tenets to Doctrines

Description
Updates
09.102025 - Updated for 1.17.x.

04.28.2025 - Updated for 1.16.0.
  • For the relationships doctrine category, faiths that accept both female and male adultery will now start with Polyamory. All other faiths still start with Holy Matrimony.

03.12.2025 - Updated for 1.15.0.

Description
This is intended as a "lite" mod which offers a near-vanilla experience. The mod changes several religious tenets into doctrines, allowing more flexibility in your choice of core tenets. To do this, it also creates three new categories for doctrines. The following tenets are affected:

  • Divine Marriage is now a Consanguinity doctrine.
  • Polyamory is now a new type of doctrine in the Marriage group called "Relationships". A new default state for this doctrine slot is added, which every faith has at game's start, called "Holy Matrimony", which gives +10 Spouse opinion to all followers.
  • All syncretism tenets are now a new type of doctrine in the Main group called "Syncretism". A new default state for this doctrine slot is added, which every faith without a syncretism tenet has at game's start, called "One True Faith". One True Faith gives +5 Same Faith opinion to all followers.
  • There's a new doctrine in the crime category, "View on Nudity". There are three options here, "Full Nudity", which is what you'd expect from Natural Primitivism, "Naked Priests", which is basically lifted from the game's Digambara faith, and "None", the default for all other faiths. This is actually coded into the base game, just moved out of the special category and into a doctrine you can actually select, with other options available.

Existing faiths have been adjusted to reflect these new additions.
  • Messalian now has the Asceticism tenet.
  • Mazdayasna which had "Divine Marriage" as a tenet now has Communal Identity in its place.
  • All faiths with Syncretist tenets now have the Adaptive tenet, except for the Yazidi faiths, each of which received a unique tenet in its place.
  • All faiths (without Polyamory) begin with the Holy Matrimony doctrine.
  • All non-syncretist faiths begin with the One True Faith doctrine.
  • All faiths that had Natural Primitivism have the Full Nudity doctrine.
  • The Digambara faith has the Naked Priests doctrine.
  • All other faiths have the default "None" doctrine for their View on Nudity.
  • -If these effects do not occur at the beginning of the game (as is standard behavior), they can be fired manually via decision. This allows you to add the mod to an existing save.

Compatibility:
  • Affects the following database entries:
  • -window_faith.gui (whole file replaced)
  • -break_with_old_ways_become_fundamentalist
  • -break_with_old_ways_become_righteous
  • -break_with_old_ways_become_chosen_people
  • -revive_magyar_paganism_decision
  • -doctrine_core_tenets
  • -doctrine_consanguinity
  • -nudity_doctrine
  • -favour_the_countryside_basques_decision_fundamentalist_path_scripted_effect
  • -favour_the_countryside_basques_decision_righteous_path_scripted_effect
  • -mozarabic_break_with_rome_decision_pluralist_path_scripted_effect
  • Mods that also affect those database entries are likely not compatible. Unfortunately I know of no way to affect doctrine_core_tenets without overwriting the whole thing. This means mods that add or change Tenets are incompatible, however, most mods that add or change Doctrines should be compatible unless they specifically alter doctrine_consanguinity or nudity_doctrine.
  • Mods that add new religions or have cosmetic changes like new icons should be compatible provided they don't affect the above things.

Thank you.
This is my first Crusader Kings 3 mod, and I'm always open to feedback. Modding this game is going to be a learning experience for me, as while I've modded other games, I haven't done much on Paradox games and their scripting system is very new to me. Plus, the workshop is fiddly as all heck. I'm rolling with it though, so please, all comments, good and bad, are welcome.

My Other Mods
Medieval Matriarchs, for those who like the idea of playing a female and/or lesbian dominated realm/dynasty.
Traditional Tenets, takes the ideas of this mod and runs a bit further with them, adding extra tenets to the base game partially inspired by CK2's Holy Fury doctrines.

This should be core part of the game...

Well, the latest bugfix patch will require a small update for the changes to Divine Marriage. I should be able to get to that today or tomorrow, but until then you can still run the mod just fine, it won't have the new "incest is virtuous for divine marriage" addition though.

Hey if i may make a suggestion....would you consider switching Arewordik's Adaptive Tenet to Cthonic Redoubts.

As a religion (even for Zoroastrianism) its kinda dead and never seen in a way similar to Yazidi. I think giving it Cthonic Redoubts would make it a more compelling goal/narrative choice for those playing the Apostolic Armenians to switch to since it shares regional holy sites.

ahh i overlooked that. Man now i need some normal ruler in my dwarf kingom...
thx for the insight. funny enough i play as roman out of the character creator and they dont have this tradition, but maybe the roman culture is buggy

@LuckDevil Only thing I can think of is that under Byzantine cultural traditions, rulers can't press claims for characters that are in some way disfigured/blemished and they must be able to produce children. Is it possible that was causing an issue?

@Ghost Fox The doctrines file works a bit differently, because core_tenets are all part of one big block of code that has to be carried over in its entirety to modify. Doctrines don't work like that, each category is its own block and they can be modified individually. Which is to say, this mod doesn't touch most of the doctrines, just consanguinity (and nudity special category), so that's the only one I need to include. I add two of my own doctrine categories, but thankfully I don't actually have to edit the base game code for that.

@LuckDevil I really can't think of any interaction this mod would do that would cause you to be unable to make claim wars.

@fhqwhgads Tenets file didn't change, but doctrines did. Might want to make sure you got that copied over.

Hi, im not entirely sure if that is this mods fault but i reformed the hellenic faith and now i cant use claim casus belli wars. i tried with other standard faiths and there i can use the claim casus belli.

@smirkyshadow It should. Paradox didn't really change anything that required new code from me, so I pretty much just version updated.
