The margin between recommended mass and theoretical maximum is there to give you a reasonable stopping distance. If you load up to theoretical maximum, you can still hover, but not really slow down any more, which means you crash, when you try to land.
But taking off with that mass might still be possible, since there might be a miniscule amount of extra thrust, that isn't used to make you hover.
And of course the recommended mass includes all the ships. They cant just all undock, to let you land. The carrier must be able to land with it's full complement of ships aboard, otherwise it is no gud.
Also the connectors are all on the bottom, because it has to work in an atmosphere with ships that are potentially damaged. So a dock that is open and you can essentially just fall onto is much easier to get to, than a dock, that is under a ceiling in some hangar deep inside the ship.
Hell, if you wanted you could even park vehicles up there. They also fit on the connectors.
Or you can put more fighters into the garage, if you hate driving.
Thats why all small craft have their connector on the bottom, so every ship can theoretically use every dock. If for example some of the dropship hangar got destroyed you still have a place to put a few dropships.
That's why I dont have ships with connectors in different directions. It's standardised.
Also at one point I was working on a battleship in the same style, but never finished it.
I am currently on a bit of a Space Engineers break, playing some other games.I don't know when willI publish something else. I am not very consistant with uploads at the best of times and also only publish things that I think are something special (for me at least).
Before the break I did build some survival stuff, but that was nothing you can't already find on the workshop.
And I was working on a new carrier, but that got seriously out of hand and I would need to have a better PC to finish it. So that's on hold aswell.
