The Prophet (pbuh) ordered and oversaw the construction of the mosque (the original on which many expansions and improvements led to what we see today) as told in the book of Sahih Muslim hadith number 1068 [authenticity backed up by narrations in hadith Sahih Muslim 1069 and 1070], he might have taken part in construction but I have not looked for evidence of this.
