Description
About the building:
The Flour Exchange Building was the first office building in Minneapolis designed in the Chicago School by New York native turned Chicago transplant Frank B. Long and his partner Frederick Kees. Long & Kees designed some of the most famous buildings in Minnesota including, but not limited to, The Lumber Exchange and Minneapolis City Hall & Hennepin Court Courthouse (both designed in the Richardsonian Romanesque school).

The construction began in 1892 but was stopped during the financial crisis of 1893 when only four stories were built. Construction picked back up later and was finally completed in 1909 when the last seven stories were added.

The building had minor modifications done in the 1970’s, which involved removing the original cornice and painting the exterior white. The cornice was easy to add back as there are historic photographs from 1910 that show it, the paint on the other hand has been kept. There are unfortunately no color photographs of the original brick color of the building, and all reference photos are white brick today.

This building is located a block away from Minneapolis City Hall and the Grain Exchange buildings. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

Great, though the roof could be more detailed
