[G&K] Reaper Civilization

In 1 collection by Pluvia
Mass Effect Collection

Description
Adds the Reaper Armada as a Civilization, led by Harbinger.

Deliberately Overpowered. Not Meant For a Normal Match.

Harbinger is believed to be the oldest and largest Reaper who, like the rest of the Reaper fleet, resides in dark space. A mysterious, though immensely powerful and cunning being, Harbinger will even communicate from dark space to directly intervene and shape events in the galaxy to the whim of the Reapers. Progress cannot be halted.

Trait: (The Harvest) Can only lose through destruction. Defeated enemies are Indoctrinated. Captured cities increase growth by 2%. Starts with one Capital Ship.

UU: Husk. Replaces Warrior. Faster movement. Free. Available to Steel.

UU: Husk. Replaces Longswordsman. Faster movement. Free. Available forever.

UU: Destroyer. Replaces Artillery. The same strength as a Rocket Artillery. Can't capture cities. Cost 2 Iron.

UU: Oculus. Replaces Triplane. Anti-Armour. The same strength as a Jet Fighter. Terrible vs cities. Costs 1 Oil.

UU: Capital Ship. Replaces GDR. Has 2 tiles range. Can Paradrop 10 tiles away. Can't capture cities. Can only be built in Dark Space.

This is the eighteenth of our planned Mass Effect civs, the Reapers. These rudimentary creatures do not comprehend their place in things. Whilst they fumble in ignorance, there is a realm of existence so far beyond their own they cannot even imagine it. Become their salvation through destruction, show them true power, bring order to the chaos, and help them ascend to perfection.

So here they are, due to popular demand, the Reapers. Their creation was an odd one, as they were overlooked and not going to be created when this collection first started, but, after inspiration and plans were created for them, they were included on the list a few weeks into releases. Their plans were simple yet complex. It was always going to be about Indoctrination, and they were always going to be ridiculously, brokenly powerful, but the difficulty was making them incredibly overpowered yet still, somehow, beatable. This situation was made even more difficult due to the Reapers caring nothing for culture, and having technology billions of years more advanced than anything the rest of the galaxy has, effectively meaning that it would be impossible for them to lose to culture or science. This left only one option; war. And, whilst their trait description seems lacking in bonuses, in reality they have so many bonuses that it couldn't fit, instead having to be summed up as "Can only lose through destruction". It means that if you have a victory type other than Domination on, the Reapers will win before the match has barely begun.

But, even with only Domination, the Reapers have been designed to take on the other eighteen races combined. Their weakness lies in the late game, the moment when everyone reaches the same level of technological advancement as them. Whilst still powerful, they're significantly weaker and able to be challenged by a united front. This turns matches with the Reapers into a game of survival. Civilisations flee and fall, the Reapers advance, seemingly unstoppable, but eventually the survivors are able to fight back, slow them down, and maybe even defeat them..

Due to not having any planets, therefore not being able to be destroyed through attrition, the Reapers have no UB's to represent this. Instead they have many UU's. The Husk is ridiculously cheap, meaning it's expendable and can use its numbers to overwhelm foes. It can also be upgraded into a more powerful Husk once Steel is obtained. The Destroyer is a powerful siege unit, used to weaken and destroy cities with ease. The Oculus is one of the main forces for air-combat and anti-armour, but it does almost nothing to cities, making it a purely anti-combat unit. The Capital Ship is the most feared of all the Reaper units, its power is tremendous, but it can only be created in Dark Space. The Reapers also start with a Capital Ship (Sovereign?) to stop others from rushing down them down in the early game and exploiting a possible weakness. If anyone tries to do that, they'll simply be crushed under the might of a Capital Ship.

On a different note, you might be wondering why Harbinger is the leader of the Reapers rather than the actual leader. It's simply to avoid spoilers for those that haven't played the series, as many people have approached me and said this collection has inspired them to play Mass Effect.

As a final note I would like to give a massive thanks to a-iccara, from Deviantart, for her incredible help on creating a custom made Reaper symbol for this.

This is a dual project and we plan on creating and releasing all these civs (in no particular order) in the near future, and hopefully you'll enjoy them. :)

Troubleshooting

  • This mod requires Gods and Kings.
  • If you have Gods and Kings and don't know how to download or activate this mod, please follow this step-by-step guide by clicking here[forums.civfanatics.com].
  • If some, but not all, of the civs downloaded, then try exiting the game and unsubscribing and resubscribing through Steam Workshop, outside of the game. Steam just acts weird sometimes.
  • If you have a Mac then Steam Workshop wont work for you. Please click here[forums.civfanatics.com] and follow the instructions.
  • If the step-by-step guide or the troubleshooting still never fixed your problem, it's a common cache issue, which can be fixed by these steps:

    1) Unsubscribe from the mod. Exit Steam and Civ 5 completely
    2) Empty your mod folder (create backups) located at: C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR USERNAME]\My documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\MODS
    3) Delete the 'Civ5ModsDatabase.db' file located at: C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR USERNAME]\My documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\cache
    4) Restart steam, subscribe, restart Civ 5.

Could we eventually get an update to be compatible with Brave New World please?
Or is it already compatible?

This mod seems to break games when used with the Enhanced User Interface mod? Any workaround? Tried unsubbing/reinstalling and it didn't fix anything

@Gabe - Glad to hear it! Love seeing new fans of the series! Though just to mention, if you have Brave New World you just need that version of my Mass Effect mod, not these versions.

Yeah they finish the tech tree in half the time, and have billions in gold, but they are as dumb as stones. Great trading partner, keep them pointed away from you and you can use them to win. Even on diety. The most OP Civ since Brazil (All Uniques).

Hello Pluvia! Thank you for uploading this crazy mod. In the two unfinished games where I've played against the Reapers, I've noticed that they can research blindingly fast, reaching most eras far ahead of any other civ, including myself. Could you please post a list of all of the Reapers' hidden bonuses?
