DNV2 Rescue Vessel Replica

Description
DNV2 (Det Norske Veritas II) is a Bergesen-class search and rescue boat in the Norwegian Rescue Society which is operated by a voluntary crew since 2014, which I’m a part of. Just like the real one with 2x500hp engines, it has a regular top speed of 38 knots and without rpm-limiting a top speed of 44 knots. I’ve tried to keep it as authentic as possible with everything from start-up procedures to crew tasks and general operation as realistic as possible.

Start-up:

Sit down in the driver seat.
Turn on the 3 screens with the flip switches.
Click the “Engines ON” button on the left side on the panel.
Engage the clutches for the water jets with the buttons on the front of the center console.
Use the throttle lever to increase the engine throttle.
Use W/S to go forwards or backwards with the water jets.
You can also synchronize the water jets (normally controlled with W/S) with the engine throttle, by clicking the “Sync Throttle And Jets” button on the front of the center console.

The range is very dependent on the throttle, but here’s a rough overview of what the different throttle values will produce in range.
- throttle: 0.5 = 270km range
- throttle: 0.6 = 180km range
- throttle: 0.7 = 90km range
- throttle: 0.8 = 60km range
- throttle: 0.9 = 40km range
- throttle: 1 = 30km range
- throttle: 1 and RPM limit off = 20km range

The computers

The screens can display mostly whatever they want by pressing the “NEXT” button in the top left corner, but with a few exceptions.
- The screen in the middle is the one where you can control the radar from. The other two screens can see the radar, but you’ll only have the touch screen buttons on the middle one.
- The screen in front of the navigator doesn’t have the starboard side camera, but instead sees the infrared camera and can control it with WASD and Up/Down.

The screens can be dimmed with the arrow buttons on the center console.

The two small screens on the drivers side is an engine monitoring screen and an alarms screen.
When an alarm goes off, the problem will be displayed on the screen on the left. Press the “mute” button on the screen to silence any alarms. The other screen can be switched between displaying engine RPM, fuel and engine temperature.

Plotting course and autopilot

Like in the real vessel, the autopilot is a hold-heading system. By pressing the autopilot button on the control pane or hotkey 4, you toggle in on/off, and it will hold the current heading.

In front of the navigator, there’s a keypad to type in waypoints. When a waypoint has been typed in, it will appear on the map and give the heading required to the waypoint and the distance (in nautical miles). This is so that the navigator can plan the next course before giving it to the driver. This is regular procedure in driving of fast response marine vessels.

Radios

At the top panel you’ll one VHF radio on each side with channels between 1 and 19. There’s one for the drive and one for the navigator. The driver also have a hotkey (5) to activate it without having to take any hands off controls. (IRL this is a small foot pedal)

At the panel on the starboard side at the rear of the bridge, there is a radio with a keypad so you can manually type in any frequency you want.

Equipment

The emergency fire suppression for the engine is a button below the center console. It can be hard to see, but if you crouch down standing behind the front seats, you’ll see it.

The storage cabinets on the rear deck each holds a mooring line connected to a small winch and a mag all. Use the controls on the hatch to wind the winch in and out.

In order to start the fire hose, have the engines turned on and then flip the switch on the roof panel called “Fire Pump”. Then go out onto the rear deck and take the hose nozzle out of the compartment to the right of the door under the electric connector. The hose will unwind when removed from the storage, and rewind when put back.

The searchlights are controlled by the arrow buttons on the control panel below the screens.

Under deck you’ll find a diesel cannister on the port side, and in a locker on the starboard side you’ll find a flashlight. It’s held by an electric connector which also charges it.

The towing winch controls is located at the winch. The driver also has an emergency release button on his right side.

The button for the heaters is on the roof at the rear wall on the port side in the bridge room.

On the roof center console you will find controls for navigation lights, deck lights, fire pump, horn, bilge pumps, engine emergency stop and red bridge light.

Power and Fuel

To recharge batteries or connect power to another vehicle, use the blue electric connector on the right side of the rear door. To connect it you will also have to flip the “Connector Land Power” switch on the wall panel just to the right inside the door.

The batteries will only recharge when the engine throttle is above 0.6
To refuel the boat, just use the fluid connector on the port side. (Diesel)
