Venus de Milo

The Venus de Milo (Aphrodite from the island of Milos) is an ancient Greek sculpture created between approximately 130 and 100 BC.

It was found in 1820 on the island of Milos (Melos) — one of the Cycladic Islands in the Aegean sea. Greece at that time was under the rule of Turkey, and the island was in addition to the Greeks and many Turkish officials. French sailor Olivier Voutier decided to go ashore and look for antiquities (at that time there was a rush on antiquities) for sale. Together with a local peasant, Yorgos Kentrotas, he unearthed a statue in the ruins of an ancient amphitheater.

Woutier tried to persuade the captain to immediately sail to Istanbul to get permission to export, but the captain refused, and Woutier gave up on his find. But another naval officer, Jules Dumont-Durville, went to Istanbul and still got permission. On his return, he found the statue on a Russian ship whose captain had been paid by a Turkish official to transport the statue to Istanbul. After difficult negotiations with the islanders, Dumont-Durville finally secured the ransom of the statue and took it by ship to France. Later, the Turkish authorities, enraged that such a valuable find had escaped them, ordered the most influential inhabitants of the island of Milos to be publicly flogged.

The hands of the statue were lost after the discovery at the time of sending to France, when a group of Turkish officials tried to force the removal-a fight began, during which the statue fell to the ground. Where her hands are now is unknown.

After the purchase by king Louis XVIII, the statue was kept in the Palace as the personal property of the kings and was almost unknown to the public. Over time, it was put on public display in the Louvre.

Греция в те времена находилась под властью Турции, и на острове было кроме греков немало и турецких чиновников. Французский моряк Оливье Вутье решил, сойдя на берег, поискать древности (в то время был ажиотаж на древности) для продажи. На пару с местным крестьянином Йоргосом Кентротасом он откопал статую на развалинах древнего амфитеатра.

Вутье попытался уговорить капитана немедленно плыть в Стамбул, чтобы получить разрешение на вывоз, но капитан отказался, и Вутье махнул рукой на свою находку. Но другой морской офицер, Жюль Дюмон-Дюрвиль, отправился в Стамбул и все-таки получил разрешение. По возвращении он обнаружил статую на российском судне, капитану которого один турецкий чиновник заплатил, чтобы тот перевёз статую в Стамбул. После тяжёлых переговоров с островитянами Дюмон-Дюрвиль всё-таки добился выкупа статуи и доставил ее на корабле во Францию. Позже турецкие власти, взбешённые тем, что такая ценная находка ушла от них, приказали подвергнуть наиболее влиятельных жителей острова Милос публичной порке.

Руки статуи были утрачены уже после находки в момент отправки во Францию, когда группа турецких чиновников пыталась силой препятствовать вывозу — началась драка, во время которой статуя упала на землю. Где сейчас находятся ее руки, неизвестно.

После покупки королем Людовиком XVIII статуя хранилась во дворце как личная собственность королей и была почти неизвестна публике. Со временем ее стали выставлять на всеобщее обозрение в Лувре.
