Description
Note: I am currently in the process of readding the mod preview images and updating the mod description, as they were outdated by about two years.

Updated on 12/17/2022: Released a working beta version for community feedback.

Hardcore Realism is a mutation that attempts to bring more realism to Left 4 Dead 2. Many aspects of the game have been completely overhauled. To list a few of the changes:

Infected

- Tanks and witches will now both kill the player in one hit.
- Tanks and witches can now spawn in any chapter of any map.
- Witches no longer lose speed when burning.
- Chargers and tanks break will doors in one hit.

Special Infected

- Special infected have been modified. This feature is experimental.

Survivors

- The black and white color filter after being incapacitated twice has been removed.
- Friendly fire is deadly. Headshots are lethal with all weapons, and chest shots with most weapons will kill a survivor.
- There is only one incap, and players revive from it with only 1 health.
- Survivors no longer respawn with primary weapons.
- Survivors now take fatal fall damage from shorter fall distances.
- Fire now does consistent damage to survivors across difficulties and sources.

Healing

- First aid kits no longer restore permanent health. They instead now restore 50 temporary health.
- Pain pills now only restore 25 temporary health.
- Temporary health decay has been slowed.
- The defibrillator has been removed. Survivors can now only respawn at Safe Rooms. First aid kits will spawn in place of the defibrillator, however.

Weapons/Items

- Firearms have been completely overhauled to be closer to their real-world counterparts. Accuracy, recoil, magazine size, rate of fire, and damage done have all been altered, with realism in mind.
- Weapon spawns can now only be grabbed by one player, and provide a finite amount of ammo.
- Pistols can be loaded with a round in the chamber if reloaded again when not completely empty (15+1).
- The desert eagle has been removed.
- Dual-wielding pistols has been removed.
- Gas cans, gas pumps, propane tanks, and oxygen tanks will no longer explode when shot. Gas cans can still be ignited with molotovs, however. Use the molotovs by the generator in the Dead Air construction site (located by the barricade) to burn a path!
- The chainsaw and grenade launcher have been removed, and will instead spawn M60s in their place on any map.
- Melee weapons are now carryable items that function similarly to the gnome or fuel cans. Switch items to drop them.
- Your active weapon/item will be dropped if you are pinned by a special infected or fall off a ledge (except for pistols, to prevent T-posing).
- Chargers can now throw and scatter a player's active weapon/item when they knock over a survivor team during a charge (except for pistols, to prevent T-posing).
- Pistols now drop when survivors die.
- Pipe bombs are now deadly to everything except the tank and witch. This also includes you.
- The body armor of riot infected will now take realistic damage from rifles, and can only survive up to six hits from 7.62x51mm NATO caliber sniper rifles before a bullet finally penetrates. For smaller rifle calibers, more rounds are required, unless you shoot them in the helmet. All rifle rounds will now penetrate riot infected helmets.
- The SG552 Commando and SCAR-L were swapped, to better match their real world equivalents. Neither of them have a zoom ability now.

UI

- Survivors can no longer see each other's health bars (unless you press tab).
- The Special Infected killfeed has been hidden, for addtional difficulty.

Known Bugs/Issues

1) Friendly fire may not work as intended with certain mods that change survivor models/hitgroups (Velociraptors, Covid-19 face masks for survivors, etc.)

2) Infected damage modifiers may not work as intended with mods that change infected models (This is primarily for the witch).

A better, more organized and detailed description and updated images are coming soon, as well as the restoration of the other gamemodes that came with the original release two years ago.

oh and also the scripts this mutation uses can cause buggy behavior in vanilla play, so when you are not playing this mutation you should disable it in the add-ons menu in-game, then restart the game entirely to ensure script changes are wiped and replaced by the vanilla ones. Behaviors include but are not limited to glitchy reload and firing animations due to conflicting magazine sizes and firing speeds, inaccessible melees when picked up, inaccessible special ammo boxes when picked up, teammate healthbars being invisible on the hud when they shouldn't be, etc etc. To play the mutation with no issues, enable it, then restart the game. To play anything else with no issues, disable this mutation, then restart the game.

just so everyone is aware, this mutation is in active development, and the description in no way accurately reflects the contents of the current build. The mutation is being worked on periodically by RainLovesCats when he has the time, and its design objective is to make the game a blend of 'exponentially more difficult' + 'slower-paced and equipment-scavenging friendly' + 'as close to real life as possible without becoming unfun/unfair'. In the current build, special infected behave considerably differently in the name of being harder to deal with, witches are as terrifying as you used to think they were when you first played, and tanks require a full team of not-stupid players to take down effectively. Gunplay has been thoroughly altered, with some weapons now excelling at certain tasks such as the AWP now being a witch killer that is the only weapon capable of causing a stumble-animation on the witch, etc etc. Please keep this in mind if you play the mutation at the moment.

Shoving now do more damages to SI , which is really good because such mechanism well counter-balances SI's fast movements , a very good feature i've discovered recently.

Also , oil tanks cannot be ignited by shooting directly at them , which is causing a problem if throwables are not available on non-official maps.

Yeah, melee weapons are a work in progress currently. I was experimenting with having them take multiple hits to kill infected, though the way the game calculates melee damage for common infected is strange so it makes them act weird.
