Then you create your normal map by running the filter over your finished diffuse map.
Well, that's my simple method anyway. It seems to work fine.
There are some settings that you can adjust when you apply the filter. It seems that to get the perfect effect we need to invert the red channel (or, in the Gimp filter dialogue box, invert the y axis):

I read about the normal map and tried it once but it didn't work out as expected. Probably I misunderstood something or I don't have the right software to generate them.
