Dollar. That word has little meaning these days.

"The Collapse" is what they called it. The end of an era. A hospitable planet is a rare thing indeed. If only the Earthborn realised just how lucky they were. I suppose it's only human nature to want more. But greed was their ultimate failing. Earth, now uninhabitable remains floating through the vast emptiness of space. A reminder of what once was. Mankind all but wiped out.

A century later and life looks very different. The Galathea—a colossal space station and a central hub to the new world—is now home to 300,000 citizens. Life is tough for most on The Galathea and the only way to survive is to work. From ages 6-15, children are educated and rigorously tested on a variety of subjects from engineering to farming. On their 16th birthday, students are assigned a career based on their performance in the A.D.U.L.T. assessment.

An engineer by trade, Viktor works in the bowels of the station fixing various mechanical and electrical faults. As a skilled worker, his job pays well and he lives a relatively comfortable life compared to most. But for as long as he can remember, Viktor has dreamed of space exploration. To be outside The Galathea. To witness the enormity of the universe with his own eyes. Surely there is more to life than wrenching on temperamental equipment day after day.

Six months later, Viktor is working outside on The Galathea's eastern landing pad. Replacing the heavy steel panels is exhausting work, but the incredible view of ships coming and going makes it all worth it. He's counting down the days until his new work placement aboard a mining vessel named "$". Leaving the safety and relative comfort of The Galathea and diving into the unknown is worrying but also exhilarating at the same time. He spots something in the distance. It's a ship he recognises instantly. An unusual vessel shaped almost like an "S". An extraordinary yet completely bizarre and ludicrous sight to behold. Who would design such a thing?

The ship lands close by. A door slides open slowly with a loud grinding sound, momentarily engulfing it in a plume of white smoke. A moment later, a man appears at the doorway. His frazzled white hair just visible beneath a black top hat. He twirls an exquisite golden cane in one hand. Viktor stares, lost for words. The man walks towards him with a strange glint in his eye. "You must be Viktor," he says. "My name is Sir Roland Elmebrigge from the Dollar Mining Company." Viktor stands still, not quite sure if his eyes are deceiving him. Of course, he's heard the rumours about the ship's captain. Everyone has. But no one actually believed them! Right? The man's features shift as he inspects the now ghostly-white face of Viktor. Snapping out of his trance, Viktor glances at the ship, then back to the man. With a huge smile and crazed eyes, the man says "Tell me, Viktor, are you ready for an adventure?"
