Description
SeaBoss Systems SCARAB Mk.I Submersible (LEGACY)

*LEGACY: No planned changes on current version. New Version may be issued.

OVERRIDE CODE: 5468

The SCARAB allows for 6 Degrees of Motion due to 4 Pivoting Engine Pods for Depth, Roll and Pitch Control, a Main Drive for Forward/Backward, Lateral Engines for Translate Left and Right as well as on the spot Yaw control. Controller Modules are on board for Auto Pitch & Roll (APR) Holding, Auto Depth (AD) Holding & Transitioning and Translation & Yaw controls. The 4 Engine Pods are on separate pivot mounts that each automatically adjust so that they are always pointing upwards. As a result it is possible to maintain Depth Holding and Rolls at various pitch angles.

Most motors are Electrical to allow for more precise controls. There is an option to couple the Diesel Engine shaft to the Main Drive shaft in order to conserve Electricity while travelling on the surface. Electric Engines are faster. Power to the Electric motors is isolated to 5 Large Batteries. There is a separate Main Power Array for Lights, Controls, Doors and the two Aircraft Engines that drive two medium generators that can be used on the surface (extendable snorkels). There is over 9000 units of Diesel Fuel available for Recharging the Batteries. Advisable operation is to traverse to a dive location on the surface with Generator Engines running.

CONTROLS:
Right now there are two separate Automated Controllers that can be turned ON and OFF using buttons found near the Pilots seat:
APR (Auto Pitch & Roll) - When Turned ON the APR will attempt to hold the submarine's pitch and roll at the angle that has been requested. The requested angle can be adjusted back and forward using the 1 and 2 keys. It is intended for keeping a ship level during and after it traverses through depths. The Sub will pitch forward and backward slightly to assist with Diving and Surfacing (the faster the speed the greater the pitch) but once it reaches the desired depth it will attempt to hold at the requested angle (which is ideally 0 pitch and roll - level). For Pitch and Roll there are Correction Throttles on the right side of the pilots chair that allow for small corrections to what is considered level (use the Artificial Horizon and slowly adjust). May need to use it to make small corrections to compensate for changes in Ballast levels. Additionally there is a Reset to Zero button that will return the requested Pitch and Roll Angles to Zero + Correction Throttles.

AD (Auto Depth) - When Turned on the AD will attempt to reach a requested Depth using the Depth Motors in the 4 Engine Pods. In order to increase the Requested Depth (sink) with APR ON hit the 3 key. Hitting the 4 key will cause the Requested Depth to decrease (rise). The Requested Depth vs Current Depth can be seen in the 2 Value Gauge in the centre just above the Artificial Horizon. There is a Key Switch in the ceiling above the pilot that overrides the Request Depth for a Return to Surface. Additionally there is a button in front of the pilot that allows you to make the Current Depth the Requested Depth. With AD on you can still fire up the MAIN DRIVE pitch down or up and overpower the self correcting engines. Allows for quick transitions.

CONTROLS FROM PILOT SEAT
W/S - MAIN DRIVE Throttle UP/DOWN - Forward/Backward Motion - the Centre lower throttle is slaved to the Pilot Chair Axis and will move up and down depending upon the Seat value. There is a button to unslave the throttle block so that it can be manipulated while out of the chair
A/D - Steering Left/Right; Yaw Left/Right
1 - With APR OFF - Pitch Forward by biasing Engine Power on Pods to Nose Down
- With APR ON - Move Requested Pitch Hold Angle Forward
2 - With APR OFF - Pitch Backward by biasing Engine Power on Pods to Nose Up
- With APR ON - Move Requested Pitch Hold Angle Backwards
3 - With AD OFF - Bias Engine Power to Move Downwards (SINK)
With AD ON - Increase Requested Holding Depth (SINK)
4 - With AD OFF - Bias Engine Power to Move Upwards (RISE)
- With AD OF - Decrease Requested Holding Depth (RISE)
5 - With APR OFF - Bias Roll Engines to Roll to Port
- With APR ON - Adjust Requested Roll Hold Angle to Port
6 - With APR OFF - Bias Roll Engines to Roll to Starboard
- With APR OFF - Adjust Requested Roll Hold Angle to Starboard
UP ARROW - Activate Pulse Engine to move Forward
DOWN ARROW - Activate Pulse Engine to move Backwards
LEFT ARROW - Translate to Port (Slide Sideways - NOTE: May need to apply some Yaw control as not perfect Translation yet)
RIGHT ARROW - Translate to Starboard (Slide Sideways)

BALLAST CONTROLS - The Submersible is generally well balanced. There are 4 ballast tanks available to set in to two groups: Front, Back. Each group has a button to Fill or Drain the tank group. There are 3 preset Ballast volume settings that can be chosen using buttons in the ceiling above the pilot: Neutral, Sink and Surface Buoyancy. Please see Version change notes for more details.

DIESEL ENGINES and GENERATORS:
The controls for the Diesel Power Generators are found in the ceiling towards the middle point of the CONTROL section. The throttle for the Engines is in the ceiling between the pilot and the sensors station. To start the Generators hit the button to deploy the Snorkels, Turn the Fuel Feed Key to generate Fuel Pressure in the Engines and to open the lockable key button for the Starter. Hit the Starter to turn the Engines over, move to the pilot seat and increase the throttle from it's starter value of 20%. Wait for Engines to rev up and then hit the Max Gear Setting to generate the maximum amount of Electricity. The are two sets of Generators: Two Mediums for recharging the Isolated Electric Engine Batteries, two small Generators for charging the isolated Systems Batteries. To shut down the Engines just turn the key again to turn off the fuel feed. Hit the button to retract the snorkels.

AUTOPILOT:
Autopilot available based on Tajin's model. Plug the coordinates in to the Keyboard in front of the Pilot's seat and hit the AutoPilot ON button. The ship will start turning for the coordinates and travel at the speed set by the throttle on the MAIN DRIVE.

FUEL TRANSFER:
When FUEL TRANSFER MODE is on it will disrupt Fuel Flow to the Engines but it will allow you complete control to transfer fuel amongst the 4 tanks using two Transfer Bias throttles and selecting the appropriate tanks. The Throttles define the "bias" for how the transfer will work. For example: Cross Connect Throttle is slightly to Port, FWD/BACK set to FWD, Port Front and SB Rear tanks are selected -> it will transfer fuel at a slow rate from SBR to PF. Another example, if all four tanks are selected, the Cross Connect Transfer Throttle is set to 0, Forward Back set to Full Forward -> Transfer will send fuel from the Rears to the Fronts but not across.
The Fuel Transfer Panel is a useful way for balancing fuel amongst the tanks to ensure there is proper weight distribution.

MANIPULATOR ARMS:
Can be controlled from either the Observation Pod or the Sensors chair. Each arm can be turned on and off independently allowing you to precisely position them where you need them.

AIRLOCK SYSTEM IN SMALL FORECASTLE:
Internal Holding Chamber Airlock System that allows for quick transitions in and out of the sub at any depth. Please see Version Change Notes for more detais.

SUPPORT POD:
Deployable from up to 95m depth. The POD has a two solar panel arrays for generating small amounts of electricity as well as two electrical connectors. Please see Version Notes.

This sub, even with it's outdated system/tech, aged like fine wine.In my opinion, it's best research sub that is decently complex, non-laggy that I've ever used.. I even was able to dock a pressurized mech, and went and explored the new caves with minimal lag with 4 other people in MP. This submarine is really fun to use in multiplayer, I can't wait to see a new version/revamp of this at somepoint!

Thanks for the comment, SBDRavemaster. Life's been extremely busy and I've had little time for Stormworks as of late. I'd very much like to revisit the SCARAB but not necessarily as a refit but a complete rebuild. With all the systems it will take some time. At this time It appears that the electrical "parameters" have settled down to their final state so that gives me some confidence that a build will be future proof. I'm considering implementing a modular engine replace. Only time will tell.

boss hog, still waiting patiently for an update to my favorite sub in the game. i know life probably is busy but i thought you would want to know there are still people out here chomping at the bit to mess around in this awesome sub again

Hi krifee2004, yes. I have the shell, generators and propulsion systems built. I'm just very unhappy with the efficiency of the electrical systems required to operate it properly. As a result its gone on the backshelf a number of times. Its particularly frustrating when systems and numbers are constantly changing (who knows if they will ever fix the buoyancy and drag on larger blocks).

For a sub to work correctly it needs that balance between power and weight. With the uncertainty of everything its enough to want to pull your hair out. 😔

"Hi app0815. Funny you should bring this up as I'm actually working on a sub build now. It's going to be different then the SCARAB but working towards it operating similarly with 6 degrees of movement, etc. Still a fair amount of work to do but it's coming along."

Are you still working on the sub?

She's very old and hasn't been touched since the electric and engine changes... she needs an overhaul of absolutely everything. Patience. :)

Hi Vengeance, I had something started but was a bit discouraged by the performance I was getting from it. I'm planning on revisiting it. Just need to find the time.
