[Updated] Douamont {Verdun}

During WW1. Fort Douamont, was the cornerstone of the double ring of 28 fortresses around the French frontier city of Verdun. Stripped of its most armaments, the fortress was captured on the 25th of February 1916 without a single shot fired. The fortress was pounded mercillessly by artillery (some 120,000 shells) and several costly French recapture attempts were made. The most notable of wich being on the 22nd of May, during wich half of the fortress fell back into French hands before being pushed back once again. It was not until October 24th when the fortress was recaptured in its entirety. It is estimated that the recapture attempts at Fort Douamont alone cost the French army in excess of 100,000 casualties.
