Description
Adds the Batarian Hegemony as a Civilization, led by Ka'hairal Balak.

Balak is a violent, but intelligent, military leader of the Batarians. Despite being responsible for a number of terrorist attacks, he believes every action he performs is for the best of his people. He guides the proud Batarians towards the future they deserve, and is willing to ignore his differences with his enemies if it is for the betterment of his people.

Trait: (Pillars of Strength) Gain 10% increased production and 15% reduced gold. Horses, Iron, Coal and Aluminum provide double quantity.

UB: Batarian State Arms. Replaces Factory. +25% production. +4 production. -15% gold. Costs 1 Coal.

UU: Slave. Replaces worker. Cheap. No maintenance. -15% effectiveness.

This is the sixteenth of our planned Mass Effect civs, the Batarians. Great leaders know that society isn't handed to you. It must be built. Production and resources are all that truly matters. Armies, cities, wonders, these are the lifeblood of a powerful civilization. With more production, and more resources, you'll be the envy of all others.

So you'd think the Batarians, with their secretive government, would be hard to design, but they actually weren't. Their slave culture inspired us to take them in a previously unexplored direction; a race based around production.

The Batarians were always a bit of problem in the galaxy, but never a problem that was taken too seriously, generally because it was always assumed they played up how powerful they actually were, hence the indirect attacks from 'rogue' Batarians. Their trait reflects that. Instead of being a direct threat through combat, they're an indirect threat due to the army and civilization they could build. +10% production from all sources, and double quantities of most strategic resources is great, but the gold penalty, inspired by their isolation from galactic society, helps keep them as a bit of a wildcard. There are many directions they can take and the resources they can provide stops the world from ignoring them.

Their UB, the BSA, grants another fantastic boost to production in exchange for a rather hefty penalty to gold, and their UU is of course a slave which, in exchange for decreased effectiveness, is incredibly cheap. Both of these helped to represent their production even further.

This is a dual project and we plan on creating and releasing all these civs (in no particular order) in the near future, and hopefully you'll enjoy them. :)

Troubleshooting

  • This mod requires Gods and Kings.
  • If you have Gods and Kings and don't know how to download or activate this mod, please follow this step-by-step guide by clicking here[forums.civfanatics.com].
  • If some, but not all, of the civs downloaded, then try exiting the game and unsubscribing and resubscribing through Steam Workshop, outside of the game. Steam just acts weird sometimes.
  • If you have a Mac then Steam Workshop wont work for you. Please click here[forums.civfanatics.com] and follow the instructions.
  • If the step-by-step guide or the troubleshooting still never fixed your problem, it's a common cache issue, which can be fixed by these steps:

    1) Unsubscribe from the mod. Exit Steam and Civ 5 completely
    2) Empty your mod folder (create backups) located at: C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR USERNAME]\My documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\MODS
    3) Delete the 'Civ5ModsDatabase.db' file located at: C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR USERNAME]\My documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\cache
    4) Restart steam, subscribe, restart Civ 5.

@Glaive - Ideologies aren't in G&K. You need to BNW version.

Waaay late to this, but having just finished a game(lost to the Terminus as she throughly dominated me in every way) I noticed that since the Factory is replaced it doesn't let you get a ideology for having 3, i'm assuming since techincally you don't have a Factory with the BSA. Not sure if that should be addressed

I just wanted to let you know that it is revealed in the books that the Batarians have the most advanced medicare in the galaxy. Maybe a UB replacing the hospital that is better, just an idea.

UPDATE V.4 - Bray has defected from the Batarians to join Aria. Marsh replaces him as a spy.

Remember to not update if you want to continue a saved game.
