Description
This is the English version of The Voices of Rome. For the German version click here. For the French version click here.

Welcome to the Voices of Rome!

This mod adds all removed Roman voice lines back into the game. Your Roman generals and units will once again shout "Roma Invicta!", "In Service of the Emperor!" and "What does Rome require of me?" on the campaign map and on the battlefield.

These voice lines were all in the game when Attila was first released!

However, when CA released the Age of Charlemagne DLC they implemented all western Christian factions as "Romans". At least that's what they are referred to in the game's code. This implementation meant that the generals and soldiers of Charlemagne, Asturias and the Lombards would refer to themselves as "Romans".
Instead of creating new voice lines or only adding certain voice lines to the new factions, CA decided to remove all voice lines that were referencing Rome from all Roman factions in the game - even the Roman Empires in the Grand Campaign.

This mod solves the issue by reimplementing all missing voice lines back into the game. It is recommended to only enable it when playing the Grand Campaign or The Last Roman and to disable it when playing Age of Charlemagne. Or else you'd hear Charlemagne screaming "Roma Invicta!" again. ;)

Compatibility and Limitations:

This mod is fully save game compatible!

This mod should work with any other mod on the Workshop that doesn't change the game's unit audio files. It also only works with the English version of the game.

Since it adds these voicelines to all "Roman" factions and many factions in Age of Charlemagne are considered to be "Romans", it is recommended to only enable this mod when playing the Grand Campaign or The Last Roman and disable it when playing Age of Charlemagne.

Because audio modding is highly restricted in Attila, the only way to get this mod to work was merging multiple pack files containing the audio samples from older patches as well as making some adjustments to keep features from newer patches intact like lip syncing, etc. However this meant that the resulting mod file became quite big (1.29 GB).

So I have no idea why, but this mod is causing my game to crash no matter where in my load order I put it. I have used this mod for many years, and never had any problems. All my mods work only when disabling this one, which is very sad because Roman Rebirth II is the core of my modlist.

Historically Charlemagne became Roman Emperor, not just our modern perception of a germanic emperor, and his friendship with the Pope meant him saying "Roma invicta" is totally legit

still works as of 2024?

The fact that they removed those lines in the first place is so fu᠎cking stupid and irritating. It doesn’t make sense historically speaking. Charlemagne was officially a ‘’Roman ‘chief’’. His kingdom was officially a Roman province. There is literally zero reason to remove those lines!

Darn. It was worth a shot. Thanks for answering.

I guess my only option would be to try to rename and replace existing audio files to make those lines available but that’s a pain.

I'm afraid this is sadly not possible without access to CA's audio modding tools. I was only able to restore these voice lines by combining older versions of CA's voice pack files with newer ones. I was not able to directly edit the tables that assign the voice lines to the units.

Wonderful mod! I had wondered where some of the voice lines went. I have a question -- some of the Roman Christian voice lines that refer to the Emperor or the Empire aren't used by pagans, which I think only use the reused Rome 2 lines. Is there a way to make these lines that refer to the Empire also fire for pagans (but still exclude the blatantly Christian lines of course).

Will the germanic tribes say something like "Allfather be praised" ?
