Blanch-Chevallier Grenade Discharger

The first true grenade launcher, the Blanch-Chevallier was created in 1916 as an alternative to existing rifle grenade launchers, which were difficult to operate. In order to make the weapon easy to use, a Martini-Henry rifle was used as basis, with the front of the rifle replaced with a large tube containing a recoil spring. This both made the weapon easy to aim and use and removed the need for anchoring it to the ground to withstand the recoil.
Despite the weapon's superior performance, it was not even trialed by the War Office, being rejected on the basis of being too heavy to carry and requiring both obsolete ,577/450 Martini-Henry blank cartridges and new, proprietary grenades instead of the existing rifle grenades. Only a single prototype was ever made, which remains to this day. Ultimately the infantry grenade launcher idea would not be revisited until 1961 with the US Army's M79.
