~Guide Overview~
This guide will try and cover a complete canonical story for Dishonored 2 by gathering information from the following sources:
  • Dishonored (2012 - Game)
    • Dishonored: The Knife of Dunwall (DLC)
    • Dishonored: The Brigmore Witches (DLC)
  • Dishonored Notes & Lore (From the game and the book 'The Dunwall Archives')
  • Dishonored 2 (2016 - Game)
  • Dishonored: Death of the Outsider (2017 - Game)
  • Dishonored: The Corroded Man (Novel)
  • Dishonored: The Wyrmwood Deceit (Comic)
  • Dishonored: The Peeress and the Price (Comic)
  • Dishonored: The Return of Daud (Novel)
  • Dishonored: The Veiled Terror (Novel)
  • The Art of Dishonored 2 (Book)
  • Harvey Smith's past Tweets, Reddit disscusions & Interviews
As new material is still being released the guide may be updated and changed. The guide will also contain heavy spoilers!

Please note:
  • I am not perfect so this guide may have typos, errors, and information within the games and media that I have missed! Please feel free to comment any of your ideas, information etc.

  • Guide contains speculation in parts. Feel free to discuss and share information I may have overlooked in the comments.

  • Choices in italics mean they do not have a confirmed outcome as canon. I have speculated and applied knowledge of Emily's character built up from the franchise to try and reason what I believe she would have done.

  • Canon or canonical means they are confirmed "genuine" choices in the lore of the game that have been confirmed by novels, comics, games or creators of the series.

  • The information in this guide is not all from in Dishonored 2, but shows what Emily would have done through Dishonored 2 if you want an exact replication of her actions.
The Protagonist
The canon protagonist for this game is Emily Kaldwin and not Corvo Attano.

This is confirmed by both people working on the game including Harvey Smith, and the novel Dishonored: The Return of Daud. Furthermore, Corvo was added as a protagonist later in development and the game starts in Emily's perspective.

Powers?
It is confirmed that canonically Emily was marked by the Outsider in Dishonored 2 rather than her rejecting his Mark. This was confirmed by the comic book Dishonored: The Peeress and the Price.

Chaos level?
The overall chaos level for Dishonored 2, like the previous game and it's DLC, is canonically Low Chaos. This means Emily would have spared as many lives as possible, killing few guards and civilians, if any.

Mission 1 - A Long Day In Dunwall

A Long Day in Dunwall is the first mission in Dishonored 2. In it, Empress Emily Kaldwin is deposed in a coup and she has to flee Dunwall.

Target - Mortimer Ramsey:
  • Emily killed Ramsey as he is a traitor and helped organize the coup, turning a lot of the City Watch against her. He also killed Captain Mayhew, who is close to both Emily and Corvo in the books and comics.

Mission 2 - Edge of the World

Edge of the World is the second mission in Dishonored 2, in which Emily Kaldwin is tasked with making her way through the streets of Karnaca to Addermire Institute, where she will eliminate the Crown Killer and investigate Anton Sokolov's whereabouts.

This mission has no targets and Emily would have just progressed to Addermire killing few or no guards.

Mission 3 - The Good Doctor

The Good Doctor is the third mission in Dishonored 2, in which Emily Kaldwin has to infiltrate the Addermire Institute in order to find information on Anton Sokolov and to eliminate the Crown Killer.

Target - The Crown Killer:
  • Alexandra Hypatia is cured from her condition using the serum created by Emily from Vasco's notes. We know this because in Dishonored: Death of the Outsider there are posters which show she has called back all phials of Addermire Solution and offers free health checks for all who have been subjected to the solution because of side effects.

Mission 4 - The Clockwork Mansion

The Clockwork Mansion is the fourth mission in Dishonored 2, in which Emily Kaldwin must enter the mechanical house of the Duke's Grand Inventor, Kirin Jindosh, eliminate him and rescue Anton Sokolov.

Target - Kirin Jindosh:
  • Kirin Jindosh is dead as of Dishonored: Death of the Outsider which is set a few months after Dishonored 2 so it is most likely Emily killed him. However, some argue that the electroshock machine could have caused so much damage to his brain that he later died. I think it is most likely Emily killed him however as she has seen what the Clockwork soldiers are capable of and their creation must be stopped.

Mission 5 - The Royal Conservatory

The Royal Conservatory is the fifth mission in Dishonored 2, where either Emily Kaldwin must infiltrate the Royal Conservatory of Karnaca to eliminate Delilah's follower, Breanna Ashworth, and prevent her from completing a mysterious device.

Target - Breanna Ashworth:
  • Breanna Ashworth is stripped of her powers by Emily using the lenses in the Oraculum and left alive. We know this from notes found by her in Dishonored: Death of the Outsider as well as mention of her and the remains of the power through the lenses in Dishonored: the Return of Daud. She is spared as she is no longer a threat.

Mission 6 - Dust District

Dust District is the sixth mission in Dishonored 2, in which Emily Kaldwin must navigate the Batista Overlook in the Dust District during the warfare between the Howlers and Overseers to collect information linking Delilah Copperspoon to the disappearance of Aramis Stilton.

Targets - Vice Overseer Liam Byrne or Paolo:
  • Emily sided with the Howlers in the Dust District, bringing Paolo the Vice Overseer to get the code to Stiltons Manor. We know this from the novel Dishonored: the Return of Daud which has the canon epilogue for this game in the back of the book. It states that Paolo went on to become Duke of Serkonos.

Note that Emily would have most likely brought Byrne unconscious so Paolo can do what he wants with him and she doesn't need to get blood on her hands.

Mission 7 - A Crack in the Slab

A Crack in the Slab is the seventh mission in Dishonored 2, in which Emily Kaldwin must navigate through Aramis Stilton's manor where reality has been distorted, and discover Delilah Copperspoon's secrets from an event three years in the past.

Target - Aramis Stilton:
  • Emily rendered Stilton unconscious in the past resulting in Meagan never losing her arm and eye. We know this because of the start to Dishonored: Death of the Outsider where Billie has both her arm and eye back. Stilton will survive the night, without going mad and he will keep ownership of his manor, performing several changes to it over the next three years. He will also keep supporting the miners and their families. This will result in an overall better future. Furthermore, Emily will probably remain a ghost in this mission without being seen as being seen could screw up the future.

Mission 8 - The Grand Palace

The Grand Palace is the eighth mission in Dishonored 2, in which Emily Kaldwin must infiltrate the Palace District and neutralize Delilah Copperspoon's final ally, Duke Luca Abele.

Target - Duke Luca Abele:
  • It is unclear if Emily killed the Duke or swapped him with Armando the body double.
I believe Emily killed the Duke as he is the main driving force behind the freeing of Delilah, as well as the organiser of the coup. However, it is up to your interpretation unless we get confirmation in future.

Mission 9 - Death to the Empress

Death to the Empress is the final mission in Dishonored 2, in which Emily Kaldwin must enter Dunwall Tower and eliminate Delilah Copperspoon.

Target - Delilah Copperspoon:
  • Delilah Copperspoon is trapped in the painting by Emily Kaldwin. This is shown in both Dishonored: the Return of Daud Epilogue and the comic Dishonored: The Peeress and the Price.

  • Billie Lurk confessed to Emily canonically and Emily forgave her. Emily also did not kill Anton Sokolov. Corvo is freed from the statue and helps Emily rule.

The Epilogue
"The world turns, and the Outsider watches, and waits. The Outsider is patient. But a change is coming. The Outsider knows it - he has seen it. And he is ready for it. So the world turns, and the Outsider waits, and he watches.

He sees:
In Karnanca, the Duke fell and in his place rose up a man of the people. Paolo has come into the world with nothing and knew the lives of the least privileged. Sometimes power shouts, and sometimes power whispers.

He sees:
In Dunwall, without ever realizing it, Delilah passed into an imagined world where her father's promises were fulfilled and her subjects would love her forever, as she sailed the ocean with a great fleet and trekked across the Pandyssian wastes.
While in the true capital, Emily the Just - Emily the Clever - ruled for decades over a prosperous, mended Empire with Corvo Attano at her side.

He sees:
In his day, Anton Sokolov fired the engines of industry, hurtling the Empire into a more sophisticated age. He dallied with nobles, wayward artists, and great inventors alike, drinking in all that life could offer. Leaving Dunwall for the last time, he headed to the cold north, contented at last, on a final voyage to take him home...

He sees:
Her.
There are things that never change, no matter how hard you try, questions you must answer. As Meagan Foster faded from this world, Billie Lurk stepped from her shadow, setting out to discover her truest self, seeking the closest thing she'd ever known to family.

The world turns and the Outsider watches. And he waits. And he is ready for what is to come."

Epilogue extract taken from Dishonored: the Return of Daud.

Have to disagree. That says Ducal Gala and we know he isn't Duke as of DOTO, Paolo is Duke. This is a news paper clipping that is likely old from the Dukes reign.

"Judging by last night's performance, he found the stimulation he was seeking. Duke Abele himself led a standing ovation for the singer's rendition of "In the Month of Darkness."

Duke is replaced by a body double in DOTO

This guide is very good, it's clear that who wrote it did their homework.
I personally think that Emily would canonically kill Duke Luca, as it is also canonical that Paolo eventually becomes Duke and it wouldn't make sense if Duke Luca was still alive, because in that case Emily would've swapped the actual Duke with his copy. So yes, Emily probably killed him.

Not to my knowledge.

Do we have any context for some of the smaller actions, such as interactions with Mindy, or Saving the man from being tossed into the Wall of light, as examples.

Guide has been amended fixing the oversight regarding the speculation around Duke Luca Abele's fate.

That's not entirely accurate; it's entirely possible that Paolo "took control" of Karnaca by using Armando (the body double) as his figurehead.

I can definitely see Paolo going that route, being the shadowy advisor behind Karnaca's "public face leader"

The Body double is the only non-lethal way and we know this was not used because the Howler's and Paolo take control of Karnaca.
