Welcome to City Sixteen!

This has been a project I've been working on for a long time now, and I am glad to announce it is finally here! Set in the post-invasion city of Oslo, I designed city 16 to be the loyalty capital of the Combine's occupation of earth.

The map is designed around servers with generally smaller populations, though is usable with larger populations

The map includes...

  • A decently sized City
  • Two apartment complexes
  • CWU Headquarters
  • a Small Hospital
  • Outdoor ration / workblock area
  • Shopping District
  • Ration distribution terminal/restaurant
  • Large nexus complete with a: Barracks, Training centers, Prison / Interrogation center / Train-station / Control room / Administrator office / And more!
  • An outland across from the city
  • A Combine outpost in said out-lands adjacent to nexus, complete with a bridge and an operational train to connect the two
  • A sewer system with numerous bases and outposts
  • A cave system
  • And much more!

[Edit:] I know it's insignificant considering how late into the map's existence I've made this retcon, and how minor it is. But given Half Life: Alyx puts North America in this canon grey zone, I've decided to retcon the city's location. It's no longer Boston (unless you want it to still be, then I won't stop you :] )

I loved this map before the skyscrapers were added. Hopefully the remake goes well. I would re-use this map for my server for sure...

That being said, I think I recall a few servers using this map back in the day. I also used it on my own server for a time, though I didn't use it for long. I was very self-conscious of the errors it had.

Thank you for the kind words! I've already addressed the /many/ issues this map had in it's development. I'm well aware of the numerous errors, bugs, and inconsistencies. Since then I've learned how to properly make maps with Hammer, I just haven't dedicated myself to a project like this in a long time. My favorite part of this map is the Citadel and Nexus.

I actually was working on a remake with a friend of mine ages ago, but I've fallen out of contact with him, and the project hasn't been touched since. I had a different variant of the map in development sometime after that. It's not a 1:1 remake, but it's a different part of the city. That remake is made properly, well optimized, etc, I only finished the main city. I haven't worked on that build in several years, and I'm hesitant to start working on it again since HL2RP seems to have died down since 2018. I may finish what I already have, just so a version of it eventually can see the light of day. That'd be nice.

My inspiration was based on the old HL2RP canon, where the combine had loyalist programs, workers' organizations, etc. My intention behind the map was to be a city that was very distinct from the others. Overgrowth instead of decaying concrete, A skyline that isn't completely dead, emphasis on the ocean, and so on. While Half Life 2 itself (and more specifically, Half Life Alyx) makes the idea of loyalists (especially workers' unions) unlikely to be something the combine had, I still think a city like this could have existed earlier in the combine's rule.

If I were to throw my two cents in and make some "Official" city 16 lore, I'd imagine this city kept itself clean, until the combine phased out loyalists. Eventually, it fell into the same familiar decay the rest of the cities eventually did. Near the events of HL2, the non-loyalist, poorer workers rose up against the Combine, and what few loyalist benefactors remained around the same time as the City 17 Uprising.

I love the idea of this place being a place of relaxation for a possible elite class in the HL universe. Something about the Universal Union still prioritizing rich elite humans like every other earth government is weirdly ironic. I love it!

This map's overall design and visuals, and interactive features where the really shine do shine. It was one of my favorites that I was sad I never got to see used in a server. If you still map, I would say you should remake this one and see the improvement. The Citadel, its prison, and the connecting areas to the Outland are one of my favorite things on one of these maps.

I cant say anything since when i spawn i spawn on the floor and it instantly kills me, if you can do anything please fix the respawn.

I feel the need to leave a comment about this. I'm fully aware of many of the massive flaws this map has. Specifically how I made it in Hammer, How I constructed it via the grid, as well as the numerous optimization errors. This was my first major project in Hammer, and it really shows. Instead of starting with something small I crunched this out. While I love this map, it cannot be understated that it is full of issues. Thanks for all the people who left positive comments though, I now know enough about hammer to where I am confident my next map, (if I ever make one) will not have these issues.
