General Information About Gestures
In Dark Souls, players use gestures to communicate with each other in the absence of a text-chat or voice-chat option. They are commonly used to indicate emotions, as well as for taunting.

Gestures require time to perform; during this time, the player is vulnerable to attacks. You cannot move or attack until the gesture is finished, another gesture is initiated, or you get attacked.
