Description
Who needs to stick to your default weapons all the time? Let your soldiers experiment.

The Basics
This mod adds two new slots to the Training Center.

These slots will enable a soldier of a proper class (ie Templars can stay home) to learn one of four disciplines:

Close Quarters: Shotgun and Bullpups
Assault: Assault Rifle and Bullpups
Marksmanship: Sniper Rifles and Vektor Rifles
Heavy: Cannons

When learned, that soldier can now equip any weapon in those categories. They will also gain +5 crit to the weapons they are class trained in. However, any non-native weapon a soldier is using (ie a shotgun on a Reaper, for instance) will be unable to crit.

To fix that, a soldier needs to train in Weapon Mastery. After doing so, they will be able to crit with non-native weapons, and gain +5 aim to the weapons they're class trained in.

There is a bit of a catch though...

The Details
By default, learning a weapon discipline takes 5 days.

Two days is added for every discipline a soldier already knows, so the final discipline on a soldier would take 11 days.

Weapon Mastery, on the other hand, takes 10 days to learn, and also gains 2 days for every discipline learned, so learning it at the very end will take 18 days.

If Weapon Mastery is learned early on beforehand however, it will multiply the training times of all remaining disciplines. So 5 days turns into 10 days, 7 days turns into 14, etc etc.

The trade-off of being unable to use crit builds for alternate weapons for a while vs being unable to quickly learn multiple disciplines will have to be made.

The Bonus
If you happen to have a mod that adds positive traits like my own More Traits mod, then there will be an additional option in the training center: Random Positive Trait.

This will grant you a random positive trait after 15 days of training time. It will always take 15 days, with no way to increase or decrease it.

FAQ
Does this work with modded classes or weapons?
Modded classes, yes. It may result in issues for primary melee classes.

Modded weapons will work if they use a vanilla weapon category. If they use a custom one, it will need to be added to the .ini

I want to change stuff
(wherever XCOM is installed)\steamapps\workshop\content\268500\1244140317\Config

XComCrossTraining.ini will have the variables you're looking for.

Does this work with Linux/MacOSX systems?
No. The highlander has been unable to update for those systems due to the latest patches not being released yet.

Please bug 2K or Feral Interactive to fix that already instead of coming to me.

Thanks

I agree with chantzofdeth, can we possibly add swords and secondary weapons (knifes, pistols or other modded shenanigans such as the long war 2 weapons) to close quarters training? Or add a new training for these weapons?

Boltcaster would be great for this.

Dont use this alongside secondary primaries or dual wield mods, cause conflicts with it and doesnt allow to shift your primary to a secondary.

is there a way to add swords? or other secondary weapons?

regretfully I think this mod is a dud for me. I trained people with this, but they were still not allowed to equip those particular weapons. For instance, a sharpshooter with training for assault rifles was still not allowed to pick up an assault rifle, and another guy I trained for shotguns was not allowed to equip those either. I do wonder if I am missing something here in all of this.

If proper abiities could be bound to WEAPONS, not to soldier classes(double shot bullpup, squadsight sniper\vector rifle etc) a mod like this would be rated muuch more highly)

..The very idea to give a player optons in choosing weapons is really good. But it demands some accompanying changes, otherwise it's just another imbalance mod for FUN, it's not about tactics( As an example: Skirmisher having two shots with a RIFLE (a big buff for his ability - maradeur), cause bullpup was intentionallly made weaker for that, and on the contrary: no reason to teach soldiers to master (nerfed) bullpups when they CAN'T shoot with them twice.

Can they learn all weapons?

Could a melee training be added?

The traits seem to be incompatible with RPGO, can anyone else confirm that?
