Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

Description
Welcome to "The Hammer," the "City of Waterfalls," "The Ambitious City:"

Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

Based upon the real world heightmap of my hometown imported and processed in World Machine, with further edits in Cities: Skylines editor for gameplay benefits.

The Niagara Escarpment - known to locals as "The Mountain" - divides the city, and wraps around the Dundas Valley in the west before turning northward. Nestled upon the south-western shore of Lake Ontario, Hamilton was originally home to First Nations people including the Six Nations Confederacy.

Many United Empire Loyalists settled in the area during the late 1700's while fleeing the American Revolution. During the War of 1812-1814 between the Americans and British, two crucial battles were fought in the area, including Burlington Heights at the western end of the lake and the Battle of Stoney Creek in the eastern part of the city. Shortly after the war, in 1815, plans for the town of Hamilton were conceived by George Hamilton when he purchased the Durand farm. Hamilton achieved city status in 1846 and by the 1850's was a thriving urban area, being an important corridor for railway and the start of steel production.

Today, Hamilton has a metropolitan population over 770,000 people and is part of the "Golden Horseshoe" around Lake Ontario that is home to over 9 million Canadians and is the most highly industrialized section of Canada. Hamilton is the 3rd largest city in Ontario and the 9th largest in Canada. Steel is a prominent industry, with 60% of Canada's production of the resource in the city. The art scene in the city is rapidly growing, with several artists and musicians relocating from Toronto to Hamilton for the greater quality of life. Numerous movies are also filmed on location in and around the city. There are over 2,000 acres of parkland, with several conservation areas and over 100 waterfalls.

This map features realistic locations including:

- Niagara Escarpment: The limestone ridgeline that divides the city north-south.
- Hamilton Harbour: Access for ships to enter port and access industry.
- Skyway Bridge: Linking the QEW highway between Toronto and Niagara.
- Burlington Heights: Highway 403 and rail lines.
- Cootes Paradise: Natural water area west of the harbour.
- Dundas Valley: including Dundas Peak and Spencer's Creek.
- Red Hill Valley: including the parkway in Stoney Creek.

This map is altered for gameplay benefits:

- Exaggerated scale for the escarpment.
- Rivers where typically smaller creeks are located.
- Sun cycle is the wrong direction.
- Boundaries cut off parts of the city including Ancaster, Dundas, Waterdown, Stoney Creek, Mount Hope. Unless you use unlock all 25 tiles mod.

This is the first iteration, produced in 2 days. Please leave your feedback so I can improve gameplay and visual quality! Thanks for building my city :)

Hey there, no I did not. I really should! My landscape generation skills have grown exponentially since I made this.

Hey this is great! Did you ever make the updated version of the map? or a finished build out one would be cool to see too.

Looking forward to finishing up this map, especially with the new Parks systems... I've put in some extra effort around the Webster Falls, Spencer Gorge, Dundas Peak area that would be perfect with the new park features!

That sounds good. I would like to build it from the ground up so when the city grows i have to build the Red Hill and the Linc up the mountain.

FYI I'm working on a new, much more realistically scaled map of Hamilton. I'm designing it based upon a 1943 map of the city so that it can allow for growth to the contemporary form. Notably, mostly the industrial areas in the Harbour changed shape. Otherwise, the highways would be the other major missing piece... but building is what this game is about!

Thanks for this mod. I'm in the military and moved away from Hamilton, but it's still home in my heart.
