Lebel Mle 1886

The first military rifle to use smokeless powder, the Lebel was the standard infantry rifle for the French military until the end of WW1. It's internal tube magazine and other features made the rifle quickly obsolete, but it's rugged, durable design kept it a favorite among troops as a service rifle until the introduction of the MAS-36 and into WW2 in small numbers. The 8mm Lebel round itself was used by several French weapons of the early 20th century.

Manufacturer: MAC, MAS and MAT
Class: bolt-action rifle

RSC M1917

A semi-automatic rifle developed during the First World War to replace the Lebel and Berthier rifles in French service after complications arose with the earlier Meunier rifle. Unlike the Meunier, which was expensive and required new ammunition, the RSC used the same ammunition as the Lebel rifle, alongside a large number of components from said rifle, reducing costs and ammunition shortages. The original rifle had a manual bolt hold and an automatic one was added alongside simplified disassembly and cleaning procedures in a later revision. Later versions of the RSC rifle can be distinguished by the differentely-shaped bolt handles and automatic bolt hold mechanisms.
Being one of the first semi-automatic rifles both issued in combat and in large numbers, there were many problems with the weapon; jams on the last round were frequent, the en-bloc clip was developed separately from the Berthier ones and thus the two were not compatible. The forward gas port required frequent cleaning and the rifle was too long for trench use. All of this led to the development of the M1918 carbine. It remained in use through the Second World War and the Germany Army distributed captured copies as the Selbstlade-Gewehr 310(f).
This example is a late pattern rifle.
