Hard mode is the third hardest difficulty in the game and, compared to normal mode, reduces the amount of batteries and bandages found, slightly increases enemy damage, and slightly increases enemy awareness.

Beware that there are reports of difficulty achievements not unlocking if you use chapter select before finishing the game.

Nightmare mode is the second hardest difficulty in the game, behind insane mode, and lets enemies kill you one or two hits, greatly reduces the amount of batteries and bandages found, and gives enemies better hearing and awareness.

Beware that there are reports of difficulty achievements not unlocking if you use chapter select before finishing the game.

Insane mode is the hardest difficulty in the game and requires extensive knowledge of enemy movements, map layouts, and objective directions. Its recommended you attempt this only after completing the game and after replaying difficult chapters and chases. Upon dying, you restart from the beginning and have to retry again. If you need help or get stuck I recommend watching the video below.

Since patch of 1.03 changed enemy placements, a new video has been linked below which accurately reflects these changes.

Turn up the gamma and increase your monitor's brightness, this is especially important if your trying to get the "Messiah" achievement.

Replay difficult chapters, chases, and situations in nightmare mode until you have memorized what to do.

Manage your battery consumption wisely, especially if your trying to get the "Messiah" achievement, by flashing it in short bursts.

Manage you sprint usage and avoid fatigue. Always make sure you have a full sprint ready before beginning a chase scene.

Use barrels, closets, lockers, trees stumps, and beds to hide from enemies
Take your time and wait for enemies to pass, dont feel the need to rush past enemies if it doesn't seem safe.

Don't get frustrated if it takes you multiple attempts, most people dont finish an insane run on their first try.

– Use 10 bandages


Self-explanatory, just find ten bandages and use them when you get damaged.

Bandages are more frequent on lower difficulties.

– Spend 10 minutes underwater


Self-explanatory. Go to a location with water, proceed to go under the water, and come back when you need air. Rest before repeating this process.

I would recommend doing this achievement at the start of "The Lake" subchapter. Just make sure you don't go to far into the water.

– Use the microphone for 20 minutes


Self-explanatory, just turn on your camera's microphone and use it for a total 20 minutes.

Make sure to turn the microphone back on as it will occasionally turn itself off.

– Crawl for 500 meters


Self-explanatory. Get to a large and safe area, like the start of "The Lake" subchapter, and crawl around the area.

The achievement should unlock after about 10 minutes of crawling.

– Perform a twelve-meter blood slide.


During the "Raining Blood" subchapter, their is a segment where the sprinkler system goes off and blood rains down. Run and then, after gaining enough speed, slide down the hallway.

The achievement will unlock after sliding twelve-meters.

– Finish the game in under 4 hours


Speedrunning this game will take you about 3 hours and requires knowledge of enemy movements, map layouts, and objective directions. I would suggest you try this after your first playthrough and/or on your insane playthrough.

– Finish the game without hiding in a barrel or closet


Self-explanatory. Avoid hiding in general unless its story related. If you accidentally hid, you can use alt + f4 to quit the game and allow you to restart from your last autosave.

The achievement will unlock after finishing the game.

– Finish the game in Insane Mode without reloading the camera battery


Self-explanatory. I highly recommended you do this while attempting your insane run and not later.

When you get the the "Inner Demon" subchapter make sure you have nearly all of your battery remaining, if not the whole thing.

When you get the the "Raining Blood" subchapter make sure you have a least half your battery remaining, if not more.

When you get the the "Val's Rebirth" subchapter make sure you have a least a third of your battery remaining, if not more.
