Description
Requirements:
 • Half-Life 2: Episode Two

Introduction:
This is a small map with a randomly assembled forest.
It will assemble the map when you load it up, but you can also press the orange button in the middle to reassemble it.

Multiplayer compatible.

You'll find the map in Garry's Mod > gm_randomly_assembled_forest .

This is more a proof of concept than a serious map as I haven't seen something similar yet.

I don't really plan on making it bigger as the map can't be optimized and it requiring even more logic.

How it works:
The map is made up out of 24 (25, if you count the middle) 1024x1024 hammer-unit tiles. Each tile has two logic_case entities assigned to it: one chooses which of the eight pre-made templates gets placed, the other one chooses the rotation.

That's also why I write "assembled" instead of "generated", as "generated" would fit more to a map where terrain is truly randomly generated and then populated with props.

Known issues:
 • Almost everything can be moved with the physgun, so be careful.
 • If you open a door in a house, e.g. the front door, the same door in other houses will also open. (Unchecking the "Preserve entity names" flag on the point_template entities fixes that problem, but then the tiles won't get properly deleted on reassembly.)
 • If the house gets placed rotated 90°, the windows don't get rotated. (I don't know how to fix this.)

Ah, but still, I can imagine the code it takes for a full-scale randomized map.

I appreciate your comment, Ley-Line, but I think that 22 likes out of 29 total ratings is good. The star rating at so few rating doesn't really have any significance. And some people just dislike just because it requires Episode 2 or it is too small.
I'm lucky this map even got 1000 visitors. A similar map of mine, ttt_random_office, which is basically the same "technology" but for ttt and in an office instead of in a forest, didn't even get 300 visitors. That could, of course, come from it being a ttt map that only works in ttt or the workshop thumbnail not being appealing enough.
But these maps had their chance. Addons get most of their publicity in the first few days after uploading, and if they don't get that first publicity, they will likely never gain more. (Unless someone popular promotes it.)
But still, it is nice to see positive comments, even if they are few, and that makes me continue to work on maps.

P.s.: I didn't work my ass off, this was a relaxed weekend project.

Dude.. This mod is underrated.. Seriously people? Three stars... For THIS?

The creator worked his ass off to try and create something never seen before in the GMapper community, and three stars is all you give him? Surely it's not a new idea for other games, but it is a new idea for Maps in GMod.

Btw, Cool concept Kasekuchen! I think you deserve way better than three stars for a unique concept brought to source-engine maps!

As a level designer myself i can tell this is pretty f*cking neat ^)

Ah, okay. Thank you for letting me know. Still, I encourage you to keep trying out maps like these. To the best of my memory, this is the first randomized map I've seen on GMod, and such creativity needs to be encouraged and supported!

Thank you!
Using my map for Machinimas sure has the upside of having different forest scenery by just pressing a button. But the downside is, that it's quite ugly as it is impossible for the tiles to have displacements, prop_detail textures, pretty water or shadows.
Of course, it's your decision whether you use my map or not.

I think I wont be removing the fence or the white tile. You can always take the ground of a tile that is not in the shot and use it to cover that up (you can use the no-collision-world tool).

This map is fantastic from a concept point of view, as it's a hoot seeing the map get shuffled around with the press of a button. This is also a great map for machinima purposes, as it allows a lot of different forest scenery without having to load multiple maps.

If I have any suggestions, it's to remove the fences and the white board in the center of the map, as both are distracting for machinima makers like me, and can break the illusion of a forest far from civilzation.
