I really like the essay here, and the extremely punishing mechanics, if you can get over it, is its own type of art, one that can only exist with significant effort, from the player, and from the developer

10/10, do not recommend. I really liked the game, it was very artful

I did really like the game, but many mechanics, are just really badly designed or not explained. while I understand this game is in early access, it just shows poorly thought out foundations, for other systems/mechanics.

For example
-The best way to make money in this game, is to sell loot, but the game doesn't tell you that fireflies, indicate where loot sources are, and doesn't tell you what kind of container is lootable, and what is not, many chests that look like they would have loot, are just simple props and do nothing

-The prey system, for the most part is completely useless, besides for the seggs, it makes very little money, prey spawn rates are really low, and you can't do anything with them. It also serves as the game's primary mechanic, similar to how battling is the primary mechanic in Pokémon. its also mind-numbingly easy & boring, it also doesn't give many unique interactions between the player and prey its always, I shoot them, i win, or I missed, they ran away.

-The map being so large, and important/plot set pieces, being so far away. I wouldn't mind this if the primary mechanic (capturing prey), between each objective, was actually interesting, it seems the dev wants to add things like swordplay, and roaming pirates in the future, but I see a lack of system, to actually implement that properly. but what this results in is the player spending upwards of 30 minutes to check out that cool mountain in the distance, only to realize its literally just a mountain, and now they have to walk 30 minutes back.

-The little things are just weird, unintuitive and player un-friendly, skipping time, is time gated, the player may have to wait upwards of 15 IRL minutes just to skip time, its also only allowed at certain locations, which are super far apart. Manual save-locations are not in consistent spots on each of the islands, sometimes the save point is by your boat, on your boat, or sometimes its in the first town, also if you lets say spent 30 minutes walking to one end of the island, you can't manually save, you have to walk back first. Certain utility NPC's are just not pointed out to the player or hard to find, like the black market, or fast-travel NPC's

3/10, Do not recommend for an average player. But it held my interest, will be checking out the next update.
