Why hello there!
I am the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, a Great Lakes bulk carrier built in 1957 and completed in early 1958. For many years, I sailed proudly, serving until November 10, 1975.

Why 1975, you may ask? Well, dear reader, that was the year I met my tragic end. While traversing Lake Superior, a powerful storm struck. Waves battered me relentlessly, and my hull could no longer withstand the stress. Although some believe I sank due to a faulty cargo hatch that let in water, many now speculate that I broke in half above the surface before plunging into the depths. On that fateful day, I took all 29 of my crew with me.

Specifications:

Length: 729 ft (222 m)
Draft: 25 ft (7.6 m) typical
Depth: 39 ft (12 m)
Depth of Hold: 33 ft 4 in (10.16 m)
Installed Power (As Built): Coal-fired Westinghouse Electric Corporation steam turbine (7,500 shp / 5,600 kW)
Refit (1971–72): Converted to oil fuel with automated boiler controls, carrying 72,000 U.S. gal (270,000 L) of fuel oil
Horsepower: 7,500 (shaft)
Propulsion: Single fixed-pitch 19.5 ft (5.9 m) propeller
Cargo Capacity: 26,116 tons
Weight (Empty): 23,000 tons
Each year, I am remembered with a solemn memorial service. The ship's bell chimes 29 times for my lost crew and once more for Gordon. "we are holding our own"

"Now the bell chimes 30 times... 29 for the crew, and 1 for Gordon."
