The new player experience is absolutely atrocious.

First off, I'd like to add that the idea to not bombard players with a ton of new moves and instead drip feed them moves was a fantastic choice for a VR game like this, in which controls are not as straightforward as other standard games. It also really feeds well into the idea that you're mastering the element you're using, as you're unlocking new techniques and passives as you use said element. By itself, it's a very good system that the devs have developed and I have to give kudos to them for that.

The leveling system, however, creates a sort of hydra of problems due to what is tied to it. First off, when you're starting out with learning and getting XP for a new element, PvP is 100% out of the question. Everyone else is, 9/10, running a full kit and build and will completely demolish you because they're not there to learn like you are, which will just lead to a miserable experience. This game has no form of SBMM or LVL-BMM (which that choice to exclude them on its own is a perfectly fine choice), which means if you wanted to learn the game via PvP with other new players, you'd have to actively search out new players and ask them to play with you. So that leaves the Co-op PvE mode for getting XP and learning your element. The problem with *that* is that it does not properly test you and whatever element you're learning. The AI does not move like a player, attack like a player, dodge like a player, react like a player, etc. Don't let the description of the game fool you: this is primarily a PvP game. The PvE exists and is fun if not repetitive, but it is not what the playerbase focuses on or holds value in, so you’re likely to be running those missions completely alone (it’s also largely what the devs hold value in, as most if not every balance change is made through the lense of PvP). So, you have realistically two options: endure PvP from the start and get curbstomped, or stick to the PvE that does not properly prepare you for the PvP.

On top of that, if you wanted to fight "fairly", as in you did not want to go into the PvP until you fully unlocked everything for the element you're focused on (and thus, ensuring you will never be disadvantaged against an opponent via your opponent having more options than you), you're looking at a 30 level grind. The first 10 levels for all your moves, level 20 for your first passive, and level 30 for your second passive. And I hope you don't get bored of the current element you're learning and leveling, because each element has it's own level. While that is a boon due to how different each element can play and lets each element have its own easing-in process, that quickly turns to tedium when you realize that levels 11-19 and 21-29 don't give you any more abilities and just give cosmetics, and also that you need to go through those dry levels 4 separate times assuming you want to unlock every technique and passive for every element.

All in all, the game is enjoyable. Unquestionably, this game is best played if you have other friends into VR who also own this game. Playing the PvP just in private matches with friends you know are on your level of experience can lead to a really fun time just messing about and learning new things with each other as you go along. If you do NOT have that, and are thinking of going into this game completely by yourself, then let this review serve as a warning for how starting off the game will be.

All this game would have to do to make me happy is enable the ability to not re-match someone right after dueling them. The amount of times I played someone, and immediately got re-matched with them next duel is infuriating
