Although I do enjoy the real life weapons in CoD, I still prefer having a handful of weapons that can carry all of at once, then having a bunch of cool and useful weapons while only being able to carry 2 at a time.
I don't hate the weapons in CoD because while samey they did introduce me to some of my favourite weapons to look for in games like the G11, AK47, and the Spas-12.
All in all, I see where your coming from and I agree to some extent.
the old CoD campaigns handles the 2 weapons only well; every weapon is real, unique and interesting, so the player gets incentivized to pick them up
Halo is a game where they design a level with no sense of flow or build up and then just throws enemies in with no rhyme or reason.
You can only carry 2 weapons, meaning that no matter what weapons you use there all gonna do similar damage, mean there's no reason to experiment with new weapons, which feeds back into the level design as normally more powerful weapons are hidden through out levels to encourage exploration.
The enemies are bland and samey with all of them easily killed with the same method of just shooting at them for behind cover.
Plus the story is just ♥♥♥♥, all in all, halo is a garbage game that fails at everything a good game or even a decent fps game should or could be and is responsible for the terrible state of the fps genera.
