STO is that game that you can't put down and before you know it you're out of time and out of money.

But seriously, if you love Trek and know what you're doing gameplay-wise, it's easy and fun to get into. The gameplay leans more into the combat then most Trekkies would prefer, but I'll take what I can get; besides, it's not like it's called an RPG for nothing. In addition, the story writing is really well done and the celebrity voice cast (and most of the non-celebrity voice cast) show that Cryptic may be trying to make a quick buck, but at least they care enough to give a quality product at the same time. If money is an issue, exercise restraint and either grind the later difficulties, or just don't play. The game is more enjoyable if you lay down a little money for a ship you like and did research on, plus it makes the harder episodes much easier (and enjoyable). Besides. it's a f2p game, what did you expect, a free ride to the end? It's a long road, getting from here to there, and Cryptic needs to stay a float, so be thankful STO is still going with good consistent writing (except for the STD and Klingon House storylines, those were absolutely atrocious; only play those if you have a friend to play them through with, it makes them bearable and comedic).

All in all, give it a try, just remember it's free to play, and over a decade old; graphics updates can only hide so much. However, with the new high-detailed ship model updates and continued well written episodes, the best time to start was yesterday, the nest best time is right now!
