Insurgency presents itself as a tactical first-person shooter (FPS) focused on realism and immersive gunplay, a premise that appeals to anyone looking for a slower, more thoughtful combat experience. However, in practice, this is not the experience most players will get. While the mechanics and design suggest tactical gameplay, the players’ general disregard for this aspect leads to an entirely different environment, one that prioritizes rushing objectives over planning and careful execution. This has left the game feeling like a missed opportunity to truly shine as a tactical FPS.

Instead of utilizing the well-designed maps, cover mechanics, and realistic weapon handling to strategize and engage in deliberate, meaningful combat, most players seem intent on sprinting directly to objectives without any form of coordination. The game’s core tactical mechanics go largely unused in a typical match, with players opting for a fast-paced, chaotic approach rather than the slower, methodical play the developers intended. This creates a disconnect between what the game is supposed to be and what it actually is in practice.

The lack of teamwork is further compounded by the game’s design, which struggles to guide players toward a tactical mindset. While Insurgency offers limited HUD and realistic gunplay, which theoretically encourage players to stay cautious and play as a team, there are no effective systems to discourage lone-wolf or reckless playstyles. Unlike some other tactical shooters that reward players for teamwork or penalize for rushing recklessly, this game leaves players free to treat every match like a race, reducing the supposed realism to a backdrop rather than an enforced part of gameplay.

In conclusion, while Insurgency has the foundation of a great tactical shooter, the lack of adherence to tactical gameplay, paired with the game’s failure to enforce such play, make it fall short. The result is a game that feels disjointed and ultimately unsatisfying for players seeking tactical depth. What could have been a standout in the genre feels more like an identity crisis, with an experience that becomes diluted.

This game is an absolute blast, especially if you’re into co-op games. I jumped in with a couple of friends, and the teamwork made the whole experience so much more intense and fun. We were constantly covering each other, setting up traps, and pulling off some awesome long-range sniper shots in slow motion, which never gets old.

The setting is creepy, with decaying buildings and underground bunkers that give the game a really tense atmosphere. The whole idea of fighting Nazi zombies in an alternate WWII scenario is just ridiculous enough to work, and the game embraces that B-movie vibe with over-the-top action and campy dialogue.
