It's a fun puzzle game with plenty of funny little nods to the most well known stories in the world. The game design is intuitive and the solutions seem simple at first, but it never quite works out the way you expect.

However, there are some drawback.
(welcome to the nitpick)
It isn't quite as extensive as the original pitch made it out to be. The trailers do make the game seem much bigger then it actually is. and while the developers have promised more in the future, it appears to be pretty slow going I'm afraid. My personal recommendation would be that if you are a fan of puzzle games add this one to your wish list and get it the next time its on sale

Like All games Produced in Traveller's Tales Golden age of Lego games, Lego Batman is a delight to play. a perfect mix of humour and action, with adorable characters and a vast array of quirky and clever puzzles that are a joy to figure out.

witch is why is pains me so much to have to say this next thing...

(welcome to my nitpick)

It gets boring.

Really, REALLY boring.

Once you play the games story mode once, there doesn't feel like there is that much of an incentive to go back and play the levels again. true, you unlock bonuses and upgrades that make things easier, but that doesn't really seem like much of a reward.
In addition, for every cool quirky puzzle I mentioned before, the level designers threw in a lazy one. You play the level once, see there is a minikit you can reach yet, but there isn't a puzzle or any obstacles to reach it, you just need a character that can jump higher or a special suit to reach it. So you go in, play the level all over again (because its almost always in the second or third section of the level), just so you can jump and reach a kit you couldn't before. its not clever or entertaining, it just seem like the developers ran out of ideas...

That being said, I DO recommend this game. But I would say buy it on sale. Because you likely wont be playing it more than once, unless you decide to try and speed run it. or your a masochist who decides to beat it to 100%

If you're a fan of Harry Potter and Lego, you'll be a fan of this. As a long time Harry Potter fan myself I've played and replayed this game people more than is strictly healthy on multiple platforms; including handheld. The characters are cute, the humour is funny, and the game play is charming.

Now for the nitpick

Like all early Lego games, this game has a fundamental flaw that I DESPISE.

The levels and the over world are scattered with Lego debris THE YOU CANT DESTROY!

It's especially annoying when your targeting around trying to find some random thing that you still need to destroy to get the last piece of a puzzle and there's all these books or bottles or Lego bricks lying around that you can't destroy!

I know its not something that can be fixed, but it is still sooo annnoooyying!!!

It's not hard to see why this game won so many awards. It is extremely entertaining, and definitely scratches the LOTR itch. The lore is stupendous, and it remains visually stunning even after 7 year. I haven't found any game ending bugs or anything I would say is disastrously wrong with it.

But there is one thing...

Welcome to my nitpick.

Some people familiar with another extremely popular game franchise might notice some... similarities.

(It's Assassin's Creed. The game is basically Assassin's Creed. Right down to the hunting down shadowy unknown enemies for revenge with some mystically unknown god like wraiths plot on the side. Even some of the animations are LITERALLY copied. Right down to the sneaking and handing of the sides of buildings.

Now I'm not saying that's bad. They knew what was popular and rolled with it.

But I am a little surprised Ubisoft didn't come after their ass for stealing their animations...)

Again, it doesn't detract from the overall game play, but it is a little distracting. Especially when you jumped off a tower... I keep waiting for the eagle screech noise to play...

It is Fun enough. The puzzles are interesting and Frogware has perfectly captured the sharp wit of Sherlock Holmes. However, despite my enjoyment I can't recommend this game to others. It suffers from many Many MANY game ending bugs. Unless you save after nearly everything cut scene and conversation it very likely that at some point your game with freeze up and you'll be unable to progress. This can be especially frustrating when you progress trough the game to near completion, only for you to forget to save once and suddenly your only recourse is to replay 2.5 hours of work and puzzles in the hopes that it doesn't happen again. now i will indulge with a bit of nitpicking: they also have several issues with textures. Specifically, objects appearing as solid black objects with no edges or depth. Its like staring into an abyss. its especially frustrating because it mostly happens to interactable objects, and its kind hard to target a specific part of an interactable object when all you can see is tat objects silhouette.
